Wednesday, June 6, 2018 The Nugget Newspaper, Sisters, Oregon C O M M U N I T 3 Y Len Babb’s art recalls the past in the West He rode, and he rode hard. And when he was done, he painted, and did a little sculpt- ing as well. All during June, Len Babb’s Western art is on display in the Community Room at Sisters Library. Last month, he showed his work at Black Butte Ranch, and at Sisters HomeLand Realty (the historic Hardy Allen building) during the Fourth Friday Art Stroll. Len was also the featured guest on the first Running Iron By Helen Schmidling Correspondent There was a time, when Len Babb finished a paint- ing, he’d give it to a friend, or maybe trade it, but mostly he’d toss it into a corner and then move on to the next one. But that was before he real- ized that, not only was he creating a legacy of art from Western history, he was craft- ing iconic images for future generations. Len spent his life as a buckaroo. He wasn’t out fix- ing fences or baling hay. See WESTERN ART on page 24 Sister Rotary provides books for kids January. A selection of six hard-cover books, chosen by a Rotarian committee with help from the Sisters Library staff, were read to the chil- dren by their teachers over the course of a few weeks. The students each selected a favorite, and that list was given to Paulina Springs Books in Sisters. The books were duly ordered and upon arrival were packed into spe- cial bags at a Rotary meeting. The bags also included good- ies from the Forest Service, Deschutes Public Library, US By Kathryn Godsiff Correspondent One hundred and twenty excited first-graders from Sisters and Tumalo filed into the Sisters High School auditorium on Friday, May 25, all set to have some fun with books. The 10th annual Books for Kids literacy event, sponsored by the Rotary Club of Sisters, kicked off what Rotarians hope will be a reading-filled summer for the students. Friday’s gathering was the culmination of several months of anticipation that began in See BOOKS on page 20 PHOTO BY JEFF OMODT Kiwanians lay on the grub for a thousand hungry buckaroos each year. Feeding hungry buckaroos at rodeo A hearty breakfast is just what’s needed to keep a cow- boy on the trail — or a rodeo fan full of fun. For over 30 years, the Sisters Kiwanis Club has cooked a pancake break- fast on Rodeo Sunday at the rodeo grounds entrance. Fifty Kiwanis volunteers serve up stacks of pancakes, bacon, sausage, cooked-to-order eggs, orange juice, milk and coffee. On June 10, seven grills will prepare breakfast for 1,000 hungry buckaroos who will consume 225 pounds of pancake mix, 300 pounds of bacon, 200 pounds of sausage patties and 180 dozen eggs. Kiwanian Earl Schroeder, who plans the food purchases, describes the breakfast: “It’s not just the food. What I like best is maybe sitting at a table with Sisters folks, rodeo visi- tors, the Rodeo queen, bronc riders, and grizzled cowboys. It exemplifies the spirit of Sisters and is a great social experience.” The Kiwanis motto is “serving the children of the world.” The breakfast clearly illustrates that motto. All proceeds go to Sisters Kiwanis in support of Sisters youth. Recipients include high school scholarships, Sisters Park & Recreation District, Family Access Network, Sisters Science Club, Healthy Beginnings, Little League, Sisters school bands, the local dental van and many others. The breakfast runs from 7 to 11 a.m. on Sunday, June 10, at the Sisters Rodeo grounds entrance. Adults cost $12; children 4 to 12 years old are $5; children 3 and under are free.
