Wednesday, May 23, 2018 The Nugget Newspaper, Sisters, Oregon 7 GirlsbLAXblosesbtobNewbergbinbfirstbroundbofbplayoffs By Rongi Yost Correspondent The girls lacrosse squad fell 16-6 in the first round of the OGLA Silver Bracket playoffs on Tuesday, May 15, and their very successful sea- son came to an abrupt end. The structure of lacrosse makes the Outlaws achieve- ment in getting to the play- offs significant: The 4A Outlaws play against 5A and 6A schools as much as three times their size. And yet the team more than held its own through a satisfying season. “I’m super-proud of the girls,” said Coach Mikaela Trott. “This is the first time we’ve made it to the playoffs since I’ve been coach (four years) and it’s definitely the first time we’ve made it to the playoffs since our new league was formed a couple of years ago (The Central Oregon League).” Newberg struck first and quickly took a 3-0 lead in last week’s action. Mary Root, who’s extraor- dinarily quick and fast, scored Sisters’ first goal on an uncon- tested shot, but Newberg answered right back and held onto their three-point advan- tage at 4-1. The Outlaws got another goal from Pearl Gregg on a penalty, with a bounce shot to the bottom-left corner of the goal about a foot in front of the goalie. It bounced on the turf and went super-high up into the left-hand corner for the score. Newberg scored several more times in the half before Mia Cook scored on a penalty shot. Mia faked low and shot high, and sent the ball over the goalie’s left shoulder and into the back of the box. At the half Newberg held a 10-3 lead over the Outlaws. Coach Trott said, “The reason Newberg was able to get so many goals that first half was because they ran the same play over and over; an isolation play, which actu- ally became a one-on-one situation in front of the goal. After a discussion about it at halftime, the girls caught on, and they did a much better job defending against that play in the second half.” Ten minutes into the sec- ond half Ellie Cook scored her first goal of the contest. Ellie received a pass from the mid- field, ran behind the goal and wrapped the crease, and sent the ball into the right-hand corner of the net. Trott said, “Ellie is our number-one scorer, and Newberg knew it. They were definitely glued to her for most of the game, and it was hard for her to get good shots in.” The Outlaws’ final goal of the contest came from Kaylee Huber. Olivia Hougham was able to intercept a pass from the goalie and made a quick pass to Huber, who drove the ball between the goalie’s legs. Newberg tacked on six goals in the second half and beat the Outlaws by 10. Trott told The Nugget that Keely Roberson stood out as the Outlaws’ best defensive player in the game. “Keely had several caused turnovers in the critical scor- ing area, and was able to get the ground balls,” stated Trott. “And, beyond that, she was a really amazing outlet when our players were getting dou- bled in the midfield trying to bring the ball up. She would be right behind them, and be open for a pass. She did a really nice job on that.” Trott added, “I was really proud of the Outlaws. They played really well, and had a good game. At the end of the day, Newberg just had more possession of the ball through- out the game. They had less dropped passes and more quick, completed passes down the field to their offense.” GET ROAD TRIP READY!
