This is the fifth Civil War living history event held at the site and the only event of its kind in Central Oregon. The reenactors also donate their time Friday, May 18, for School Day, when the camps of the Blue and Gray are open just for students on school field trips. More than 1,100 students will participate this year. The nonprofit Northwest Civil War Council will pres- ent a full Civil War reenact- ment at House on Metolius, Saturday and Sunday, May 19 and 20. But it was not until recent developments in ancient DNA testing that the evidence has become fully accepted. Dr. Dennis Jenkins has been instrumental in verify- ing and expanding the Paisley Caves research first conducted by Dr. Luther Cressman in the late 1930s. Dating of camel and horse bones, artifacts, twigs, and dried human feces containing Native American DNA between 12,900 and 14,500 years ago indicates that people lived in the caves and probably hunted camels, horses, and other animals at the end of the Pleistocene. Dr. Jenkins, a senior research archaeologist at the University of Oregon, will speak at The Belfry as part of the Frontiers in Science lecture series sponsored by the Sisters Science Club and supported by the UO’s Museum of Natural and See PREHISTORIC on page 18 By Jodi Schneider McNamee Correspondent Each year since 2009, on the second Thursday in May, tens of thousands of associ- ates from Keller Williams Realty across the country participate in the RED Day (Renew, Energize, Donate) initiative. They donate that day to a wide range of proj- ects, devoting their time to community service through activities ranging from food and blood drives to rebuilding homes and schools for com- munity members in need. On Thursday, May 9, Keller Williams Central Oregon Realty associates shut down their offices for the annual RED Day effort. “We had over 150 of our Keller Williams Central Oregon brokers participate from our local office in some way or another,” said Sisters resident Jodi Satko, broker for Keller Williams. “It was an awesome privilege to be the organizing chairperson for such an amazing community event. The committee worked tirelessly to vet the charities and make sure we fulfilled their needs.” The associates split into groups serving four charities in Central Oregon and had an in-office collection for Bethlehem Inn Bend shelter and rehabilitation center for the homeless. One group volunteered with property cleanup at the new Wellness Ranch in Tumalo, a nonprofit organi- zation that provides equine- assisted psychotherapy, acupuncture, yoga, and other holistic and integrative mental health and wellness services for veterans, trauma survi- vors and local community. Another team picked up over two truckloads of debris for a Forest Service trail cleanup. Another helped with reno- vation for Band of Brothers Redmond Chapter. The other team helped with cleanup at Harmony Farm Sanctuary in Sisters. Courtney Satko and Shaini Bourland, both agents from Keller Williams Bend, headed up the team of 25 volunteers at Harmony Farm Sanctuary in Sisters.
