Berhorst October 28, 1936 — March 10, 2018 Sisters resident Norman F. Berhorst passed away March 10, following an extended ill- ness. He had lived in Sisters for the past 14 years and was well known by many for his sense of humor and his enter- taining stories of his life. Norman was born October 28, 1936 in St. Paul, Oregon, the son of Frank and Irene Berhorst. He graduated from St. Paul High School and served as an altar boy for the St. Paul Catholic Church. He was active as a volun- teer and participant in the St. Paul Rodeo beginning at the age of 18. In 1965, Norman and two other St. Paul resi- dents traveled to Pendleton to participate in the wild horse race at the Pendleton Roundup. Norman was the one who climbed into the saddle while the other two held the bronco. Norm rode the bronco to the finish line. He and his friends were the winners and each received a championship buckle. Norman later married Irene Mullen. After Irene passed away, he moved to Harrisburg and worked at a garbage service before buy- ing the company and operat- ing it as Norman’s Garbage Service. In Harrisburg, Norman met Janet O’Brien and they married in 1989. In 2004, he sold the busi- ness and the couple moved to Sisters where he enjoyed 14 years as a volunteer at the Sisters Rodeo. In his free time, he enjoyed hunting, fishing and camping with family and friends throughout central and eastern Oregon. In 2016, he and his Pendleton Roundup partici- pants were honored by being named to the St. Paul Rodeo Hall of Fame. Norman is survived by a son, Jeffory; his wife, Janet; and her children: Eugene B. O’Brien and wife Kari and their children Brandon, Josh, Megan, Mariah; Robert B. O’Brien, wife Jeanne, and his daughter Lindy; Scott O’Brien and wife Tayna and their children Scott Jr., Vincent, Anthony, Vander, Robbie, Scotty, and Arron. Another son of Janet’s, Ricky Wayne, is deceased. A private family mass will be held at St. Edward’s Catholic Church in Sisters on March 24. A memorial celebration of his life will be held on March 31 at 2 p.m. at Takoda’s Restaurant. Donations in memory of Norman may be made to St. Charles Hospice. 1.9515 in — Last Week’s Puzzle Solved — LaVerne Edris Sawyer June 6, 1923 — March 6, 2018 LaVerne Edris Sawyer (called “Lu” by many friends and family) was born to Clara and Eddie Holm on June 6, 1923 in Moorhead, Minnesota. She was the oldest of four children and resided in Minnesota until she moved to the San Francisco Bay Area to work in the shipyards during the war. She met Wesley Sawyer in San Jose, California, and they were married in July of 1947. Their son Tom was born in 1953 and daughter Gayle in 1956. In 1963, the family moved from San Jose to the redwoods of Scotts Valley, California. There they were active in their local church and community, and hosted many gatherings of friends and family. LaVerne loved to bake and she carried on her family’s tradition of mak- ing Scandinavian cookies at Christmas. She was also an accomplished seamstress. In 1990, Wes and LaVerne moved to Salem, and then to Sisters in 2001. During her 16+ years in Sisters, LaVerne faithfully attended Sisters Community Church, volunteered for Heartwarmers, and checked Bi-Mart lucky numbers every Tuesday for several friends and family. At 94 years of age, LaVerne was still driving herself and friends to activi- ties in Sisters and looked for any opportunity to be helpful to those around her. LaVerne was preceded in death by her husband, Wes; sister, Darlene Hightower; and brother, Duane Holm. She is survived by her sister, Ava Orr; son, Tom Sawyer; daughter, Gayle Sawyer; and her grandchil- dren; and great-grandchil- dren, all of whom will for- ever miss her sweet presence. A memorial service will be held on March 31 at 3 p.m. at Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church in Sisters.
