Executive Director Sharlene Weed and Board President Roger Fairfield attended the advocacy day and were able to meet with State representatives Daniel Bonham and Gene Whisnant as well as senators Cliff Bentz and Tim Knopp. “It was an exciting and energizing day,” Fairfield said. “We went to Salem to talk with our legislators about issues important to Habitat regarding affordable housing. Three wrestlers advance to state championships Exploring art and community By Rongi Yost Correspondent Seventeen Outlaws par- ticipated in the OSAA 4A Special District #2 Regional Tournament held at Sweet Home High School on Friday and Saturday, February 9 and 10. Three senior wrestlers, Damien Wills (145 pounds), Dustin Smith (152 pounds), and Casey Warburton (285 pounds), all qualified for the State Championships, which will be held next weekend. This marks the biggest contin- gent of wrestlers to attend the big dance since Coach John Downs took over the program six years ago. Wills wrestled six tough matches over the two-day event, and Downs told The Nugget that in the six years he’s coached the Outlaws he’s never seen anyone wrestle with more heart. “Honestly, Damien sur- prised all of us with how suc- cessful his weekend went,” said Downs. “Damien had some hard fought wins. It wasn’t enough that he earned all of his wins with pins, but See WRESTLERS on page 18 By Helen Schmidling Correspondent Exploring the world of regional creative residencies, courtesy of The Roundhouse Foundation, recent works by six Sisters artists are now on exhibit at Sisters Art Works. Last Thursday evening, these six artists reported on their experiences while studying and making art at residencies all around the country. Then, artist and businesswoman Suzanne Redfield described a mission to Europe’s Nordic region that she shared with Kathy Deggendorfer last year, to discover what it takes to create an alliance between art and community. Finally, Deggendorfer, founder and trustee of The Roundhouse Foundation, tied everything together with an updated vision for their recent pur- chase of Pine Meadow Ranch. The artists talked about their residencies, begin- ning with printmakers Dawn Emerson and Carolyn Platt. Together they attended Crow’s Shadow Institute for the Arts near Pendleton. They focused on studio time, devel- oping their own work and learning new processes from master printers Frank Janzen and Judy Bauman. “I was a messy monotype person, but they brought out a whole new procedure for us,” Emerson said. Crow’s Shadow, founded by Oregon artist and print- maker James Lavadour, is located on the Umatilla Indian Reservation. It began as a cre- ative conduit for educational, social, and economic oppor- tunity for Native Americans.
