Wednesday, January 24, 2018 The Nugget Newspaper, Sisters, Oregon C O M M U N I T 3 Y Science Club speaker will explore genetics Barbara Pettersen under- stands genetics from a very human perspective. As a certified genetics counselor for more than 30 years, she has guided families through some of life’s most challenging decisions: What are our options for having a child, given our genetic test results or family history of inherited disorders? Should I have that surgery to pre-empt the possibility of breast can- cer? One of my parents has Huntington’s Disease – will I develop it, too? Pettersen can’t answer those questions for her clients but she can share the com- plicated science of genetics with clarity, compassion and understanding. On Tuesday, January 30, Pettersen will speak on “The New Genetics: Promises and Pitfalls” at The Belfry for the Sisters Science Club “Frontiers in Science” series. After an overview of medically accepted and highly accurate genetic tests, Pettersen will address Direct- to-Consumer (DTC) tests See GENETICS on page 31 Stitchin’ Post reopens with a new look Outdoor Quilt Show, has been inducted into the Quilter’s Hall of Fame and has authored close to 30 books. Now it’s time for Jean to hand Stitchin’ Post to her daughter Valori Wells- Kennedy and see Valori ful- fill her creative vision. It’s an exciting time for the mother/daughter duo as Jean gives Valori support and encouragement to take the shop in a direction that reflects her daughter’s per- sonal style and what she has achieved as a multi-talented By Katy Yoder Correspondent In 1975 Jean Wells opened Stitchin’ Post with a little bit of money and big dreams. With help from a business mentoring program she got the tools she needed to methodically grow her busi- ness and her brand. A pas- sionate teacher and advocate for the arts, Wells has taught internationally and single- handedly introduced Sisters to thousands of people. Since she opened her shop, Wells founded the world-renowned Sisters See STITCHIN’ POST on page 23 PHOTO BY JIM ANDERSON The Inflatable Universe, unrolled, puffed up and ready to go in the high school lecture room. Students roll out inflatable universe By Jim Anderson Correspondent If there’s one thing Sisters High School science teacher Rima Givot loves to do, it is teach astronomy to her stu- dents — and to anyone else who will listen. That’s the reason she keeps the universe rolled up and stored away in the high school. Last week, she got her stu- dents Amy Hills and Rylee Funk to give her a hand haul- ing her portable planetarium — with attached universe — into the school’s confer- ence room, hook it to the air compressor and in a huff-and- a-puff, it was ready to go. Givot and her students, many of them members of the Sisters High School Astronomy Club, are get- ting the jump on the upcom- ing Science Fair to be held March 17. That’s when she and her students will be using the inflatable planetarium to teach anyone who crawls inside about what’s in the dark sky over our heads at night. In addition to helping the people of Sisters Country recognize and understand the coming and going of the objects in our night sky, Givot also uses the portable planetarium to take part in RECON — Research and Education Collaborative Occultation Network. This is a unique citizen science research opportunity that engages students, teach- ers and residents from over 50 communities in the west- ern United States to investi- gate the outer solar system.
