Born on September 10, 1939, he led a life full of adventure and awe at the beauty of the natural world. His formative years were spent in Southern California where he explored the des- erts, the mountains and the ocean. Throughout his youth he made a living as a free- lance graphic artist, a met- alsmith, and a wooden toy- maker. He moved to Oregon with his wife, Joy, to escape the growing encroachments of mankind upon his former paradise. They had two sons, Clare and Gabe, then settled in the small town of Sisters. Socioeconomic changes of the late 1970s led him to become a barber just prior to divorcing from Joy. He lovingly adorned the towns- folk of Sisters with stylish hairdos for over two decades while he continued to derive deeply philosophical and spiritual joy from his appre- ciation of nature. In 2001, Jack moved with his son Gabe to This Week’s Crossword Sponsors Livingston, Montana, where he opened another barber shop. Together with his son, they explored the far-reach- ing nooks and crannies of Montana in all its splendor. He retired in September of 2016 and moved to Butte, Montana, to live with Gabe. Jack continued to play jazz guitar and walk his beloved dogs Tuck and Skeeter, for several miles every day. He was healthy, happy and vigorous until a freak bowel ischemia took his life. Jack is survived by his dogs, two sons, a two- year-old granddaughter from Clare, and a granddaughter due in February from Gabe. His many lifelong friends, his sister, Bev, and her exten- sive family, all who knew him will miss him deeply. Never has there walked a kinder, more generous or humorous soul.
