PHOTO PROVIDED Middle schoolers work go save bags Susie Werts is at it again. First she was saving the mon- arch butterflies, and now bats. Susie started this project by educating her students about bats. There are 1,200 species that we know of. A plague is affecting our bat population called White Nose Syndrome (WNS). It’s a fun- gus passed from bat to bat and also in various U.S. caves. So how is Werts saving the bats? This is where Steve Madsen comes in. He is a cabinetmaker who donated his time to show middle school students how to build bat houses. The students caulked and screwed four of these houses together. Each house can hold about 100 bats. They are being donated to the Deschutes National Forest and hung in local for- ests with the hope of curbing the spread of WNS. Werts’ favorite bat is the spotted bat, though the houses will most likely become home to the more common brown bat. Both bats are threat- ened, in part from WNS and humans invading their homes. The brown bat is more com- mon in Sisters, eating insects and living in the bark of trees, attics, and porches. In winter they hibernate in caves, leav- ing on occasion to find food. While out in the forest keep your eyes open for the bat houses. Sisters Middle School hopes to partner with the high school to build larger bat houses. Volunteers and sponsors made it possible to serve 250 meals at the Sisters Community Thanksgiving Dinner last Thursday. Communigy dinner highlighgs holiday The fourth year of the annual Sisters Community Thanksgiving Dinner is behind us, but the thankful- ness is far from over, accord- ing to Jennifer Knowles- Seher, one of the event’s organizers. More than 50 volunteers came together to pitch in and serve more than 250 hot, delicious meals to the community, including the on-shift firefighters of the Sisters-Camp Sherman Rural Fire Protection District on Thanksgiving evening. The event was held at Sisters Community Church. “Volunteer time isn’t all that makes it happen, though,” Seher said. “This year, we’ve had many local community businesses pitch in to help offset the costs of the food needed to make this a free event for all who wish or need to have a meal.” (See “Sisters salutes,” page 11). This is the second year the community event has been held to provide meals for people who may not have another place to go to cel- ebrate Thanksgiving. “As a host and sponsor, I couldn’t have imagined just how big this would have grown in such a short time,” Seher said. “I can say, how- ever, that Thanksgiving has become a day I look forward to every year for JUST this very reason. I can’t thank everyone involved enough for all the time, effort, thoughts, prayers, contributions and hard work. “Coming together to share a meal with precious friends, neighbors and family is what As a host and sponsor, I couldn’t have imagined just how big this would have grown in such a short time. — Jennifer Knowles-Seher Thanksgiving is — and this particular event defines what community is, and why I love Sisters so very much.” SISTERS AREA MEETING CALENDAR BOARDS, GROUPS, CLUBS Central Oregon Fly Tyers Guild 4th Saturdays, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. For location information: 541-549-2072.
