Wednesday, November 29, 2017 The Nugget Newspaper, Sisters, Oregon PEDESTRIANS: Twilight can be a particularly dangerous time Continued from page 1 roadway (see related story, page 7). While pedestrians have the right-of-way, it is wise for those on foot to be especially cautious this time of year. Don’t assume that because you see a car coming that the driver can see you. If you are wearing dark clothing, you may be all but invisible, even under streetlights. Carry a flashlight and deploy it if you’re going to be out at twilight or later, and stay alert to your surround- ings. Distracted walking can be almost as dangerous as distracted driving. Sisters’ large population of deer are still moving around at twilight and they are par- ticularly hard to see as dark- ness falls. Drivers should stay alert and above all slow down to give themselves plenty of stopping distance. The need to slow down becomes even more acute in rain or snow conditions, where visibility is further diminished and streets and roadways are wet and potentially slick. Mathews, Tribune News Service Sgage office focuses on ougdoor recreagion SALEM (AP) — A newly created state office is hoping to take Oregon’s recreational economy from good to great. The Office of Outdoor Recreation was created by the state lawmakers last leg- islative session in response to the decline in the percent- age of Oregonians who take part in outdoor recreation, the Statesman Journal reported Sunday. While the recreational economy continues to be strong in cities such as Bend and Portland, Chris Havel with the Oregon Parks and Recreation Department said the state is concerned about other regions that are falling behind and want to figure out what can be done about it. The new office will begin by focusing on improving access and participation to outdoor recreation and the stewardships and sustainabil- ity of resources. “The goal is to see outdoor recreation reach its full poten- tial through a unified strat- egy,” Havel said. Some have called the new office an unnecessary expense and doubt it will pay much attention to hunting, fish- ing and motorized recreation because its prominent sup- porters — Keen Footwear and REI — are known to primar- ily support hiking, biking and kayaking. “Despite the fact that hunting is a longstanding and strong economic driver, Oregon’s government con- tinues to ignore it,” said Dominic Aiello, president of the Oregon Outdoor Council, which promotes hunting. “Travel Oregon, the state’s official tourism office, doesn’t even list hunting under the ‘Things To Do’ for outdoor recreation in Oregon.” Havel denies that the office will prioritize select forms of recreation, but he did recog- nize that outdoor recreation is a vast industry to work with. “The only comfort is there’s a large community ready to help, and a hunger to find a better way forward,” he said. The state is still in process of finding a director to lead the unit.
