4 Wednesday, November 22, 2017 The Nugget Newspaper, Sisters, Oregon Lady Outlaws ready for basketball season By Rongi Yost Correspondent The Lady Outlaws basket- ball team is practicing hard and looking forward to an exciting new season. Sixteen players will make up the var- sity roster, and energy and excitement mark the squad. Many of the players were involved in June basketball and attended Team Camp at Western Oregon University. Coach Alan VonStein told The Nugget that the summer experiences helped hone team cohesiveness, and gave them a better understanding of team offense and defense. This year’s squad is young, boast- ing only one senior player, Rylee Weber. Weber returns as a wing player and a leader for the young Outlaws. Junior Alexa Stewart returns at both the wing and point guard posi- tion. Sophomore Olivia Hougham will lend help as a point guard. Junior Sydney Head and sophomore Kaylee Huber will both see time at the wing position, and Head will also play at post. Junior Meaghan Greaney and sophomores Gracen Sundstrom and Rheanna Salisbury will all see time in the post. Junior Sophia Bianchi will likely see some time in the paint also. Sophomore Josie Aylor returns as a utility player, and will be able to step in at any position. New to the squad are juniors Isabelle Spitler (guard), and Mirjum Eheler (exchange student from Switzerland who will play in the post); sophomores Hallie Schwartz (guard), Emma Horner (post); freshmen Ellie Rush (guard), and Faith Godfrey-Hougham (wing). The young team lacks height, with their tallest player at 5 feet 10 inches, so the posts will need to be strong and quick to compensate. Vo n S t e i n said, “Developing a solid, strong base and out-maneuvering the opponent will be key. All players will need to func- tion within the realm of the offense, which includes the guards making good passes, making hard and meaningful cuts to the basket, and setting strong screens.” The Outlaws motto this year is “value the ball,” as there is a definite need to improve on turnovers from last season (average of 23 per game). The team also looks to improve on their field-goal percentage, as they only shot 24 percent from the field last year. VonStein said, “So far, in practice, everything is look- ing up and exciting for the team, with improvement in all areas very apparent. Good athletes, good students, and strong young women lay the groundwork for a success- ful and fun season! We don’t have any stars, just a well- rounded and motivated team of players.” Everyth ing for You r Home & Hol iday Gues ts SHS yearbook program on a roll By Tunker Higgins Correspondent The Sisters High School 2017-2018 yearbook team is filled with students whose main goal is to create a photographic timeline of the year that will provide snapshots of students’ lives that will echo for years to come. Loriel Cook, the advisor, and four staff members — Wyatt Hernandez, Kendra Sitz, Ellie and Mia Cook — attended the Northwest summer yearbook camp where they learned about putting together a quality yearbook. The team consists of 14 students who bring unique artistic styles and ideas. The team has all agreed to make this yearbook unlike any yearbook that has been seen before. They hope to achieve this by increasing coverage of events, stu- dents, and staff. They also hope to increase advertis- ing options for those in the community. Yearbooks are now on sale for $55 online at www. yearbookordercenter.com. PHOTO PROVIDED The high snhool yearbook nrew is already marketing this year’s book.
