Dennis McGregor has launched a Kickstarter crowd- funding campaign to fund publication of a new art book. Kickstarter is an online funding mechanism used by creators of all sorts to capi- talize projects. Donors to the project receive the prod- uct and various rewards depending upon their level of support. About three years ago, McGregor painted a picture of a turtle climbing on a barbed- wire fence. He added a bird and then realized the bird he had painted was a turtle dove. He was fairly amused that he painted a turtle and a dove and the dove was a turtle dove. He figured what the heck and painted a bull and a frog next. Bullfrog. Other folks were amused as well, and without fail had suggestions of their own, like tiger shark, horse- fly and so on. Some people strayed from the concept with ideas like “skunk cabbage” and “lightning bug.” One PHOTO PROVIDED The cover of Dennis McGregor’s proposed book “You Stole My Name” guy even advocated for tools like “monkey wrench” but McGregor insisted that the series be about two animals. Twenty paintings later his determination paid off with a series that has become an engaging picture book. The illustrations are accompa- nied by delightfully clever verses. “Yes, it’s a children’s book,” Dennis explains, “but it is also an art book for all ages”. The creative work is done and the 32-page hardcover book is ready for print, as soon as it gets crowd-funded through Kickstarter. The campaign will run through the month of November, and every page of “You Stole My Name” can be enjoyed at Kickstarter.com/ DennisMcGregor. OSU student ill with meningococcal disease CORVALLIS (AP) — Health officials say an Oregon State University student on the Corvallis campus has been diagnosed with meningo- coccal disease. News outlets reported the student fell ill October 25. Bill Emminger, Benton County environmental health director, says the student’s health had improved Friday, but he didn’t have specifics. The health department is testing to determine the strain of meningococcal disease. Emminger says medical professionals are working to identify anyone who had close contact with the ill student and provide them with preventa- tive antibiotics. Symptoms include the sudden onset of a fever, stiff neck and headache. It can also cause flu-like symptoms and nausea, vomiting and a rash. The disease isn’t highly contagious, Emminger said, but is spread through saliva and respiratory droplets. A U of O student died from the disease in 2015.
