Wednesday, October 11, 2017 The Nugget Newspaper, Sisters, Oregon 9 No. 1-ranked Cottage Grove too much for Outlaws By Rongi Yost Correspondent The Outlaws football squad was clobbered 44-14 at home against top-ranked Cottage Grove on Friday, October 6. Despite the loss, Coach Neil Fendall told The Nugget he felt the Outlaws played one of their best games of the season. Cottage Grove scored their first TD with five seconds left in the first quarter. The extra point was good and the Lions went up 7-0, and held the lead the entire game. Early in the second quarter, the Outlaws closed the gap to 7-6. Taylor Fendall threw a 40-yard pass to Jett Mingus for the score. With time run out in the half, the Lions kicked a field goal, and went up 17-6. Cottage Grove tacked on three more touchdowns in the third quarter. The Lions scored on a 30-yard TD run, a 16-yard run, and a 25-yard pick-six. Brady Wessel blocked the final PAT attempt, but CG had pushed to a 37-6 lead. The Lions’ final TD came in the fourth quarter on a one- yard run. The extra-point was good and CG extended their lead to 44-6. At the end of the fourth, Gator Haken scored on a three-yard run. The two-point pass from Fendall to Mingus was good and the Outlaws added seven points to the scoreboard. Time ran out with the score at 44-14. Sisters only had one pen- alty the entire contest, which was a huge improvement compared to previous games. The Outlaws also accrued almost 300 yards of offense on 50 plays. Fendall noted several play- ers who he felt had a great game. “The entire offensive line played extremely well, and Fall Cleanup? We make it easy for you! almost all of them played every down,” said Fendall. “They all played hard, and handled the bumps and bruises. Ethan Morgan, Korbin Sharp, and Jared Richerson all ran extremely well, and Jett Mingus had a really good game on both sides of the ball.” The entire offensive line played extremely well, and almost all of them played every down. — Coach Neil Fendall The Outlaws are 0-3 in league and 2-4 overall, but are still in the playoff hunt. Sisters’ next game will be at Elmira on Friday, October 13, against the Falcons. PHOTO BY JERRY BALDOCK Gator Haken scores versus Cottage Grove.
