Wednesday, October 4, 2017 The Nugget Newspaper, Sisters, Oregon C O M M U N I T 3 Y Sisters to host annual Harvest Faire The air has turned crisp and there’s a scent of pump- kin in the air — it’s time for the Sisters Harvest Faire. The Sisters Area Chamber of Commerce will host the annual fall market event on Saturday and Sunday, October 14-15 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. both days. The event is located on Main Avenue, next to Fir Street Park, offering plenty of parking and extensive shop- ping that makes this event a tradition. More than 150 jur- ied artisan vendors will be present selling quality hand- crafted items including pot- tery, metal art, photography, painting, jewelry, clothing, furniture, home décor, spe- cialty foods and more. For years people from all over Oregon and the Northwest converge on Sisters to celebrate the chang- ing season with this festival See HARVEST FAIRE on page 30 PHOTO BY JERRY BALDOCK Outlaw moms got an up-close look at the inner workings of the sport of football last month. Event joins firefighters and Latino community By Katie Stewart Correspondent Chief Roger Johnson of the Sisters-Camp Sherman fire district saw a need in the community to increase diversity through involve- ment in programs. The idea is to create a more welcoming community environment that encouraged involvement of all groups. In partnership with Citizens4Civility, Johnson was put into contact with Ruth Jones of OSU Open Campus, which began the conversation about an event for Latino families in Sisters which eventually became the Sisters Fire Family Night. The event went forward last August 2, after months of planning. It could not had been better timing, consid- ering how busy the fire sta- tion became in the following weeks. The event aimed to bring Latino families in to the fire station to learn about intern- ships, volunteer opportuni- ties, use of AEDs (Automatic External Defibrilators), personal health and safety within the home. The event was well-attended. There were about 80 Latino com- munity members who took time out of their Wednesday night to have dinner with and See FIRE NIGHT on page 24 A glimpse behind the football curtain Football is a complex sport. The better you under- stand the complexities, the deeper your appreciation for the game. And when your child is playing in a rough sport, concerns over safety also come into play. The mothers of Sisters Outlaws football athletes got a good hard look at the workings of the game last month in The Outlaw Ladies Football Clinic, inspired by Lynne Fendall, the wife of Outlaws Head Coach Neil Fendall. “I have been married to a high school/collegiate coach for nearly 17 years and recog- nize that as a woman, I have an above-average under- standing of the game and therefore a great appreciation for the sport,” Fendall told The Nugget. “Football is much more enjoyable when you understand what’s going on, and we wanted to offer this to moms of players and anyone who simply wanted to learn about the game.” The event included a bit of history on the game; a Football 101 session with Coach Fendall; a series of drills led by Outlaws foot- ball players; and a session on concussions with Sisters neurologist Bob Collins (see story, page 19). The Bend Rugby Club provided a dem- onstration of refined tackling technique, which is being used to minimize the risk of injury. The participants then got to put their newfound understanding into practice on the field. “We divided into two teams for a flag football game where football play- ers coached us in a jambo- ree-style scrimmage where each team had 10 plays on offense and defense,” Lynne Fendall said. “Overall, it was received very well, there were a lot of laughs, no inju- ries to report and left every- one with real good sense of community.” Reactions for participants indicated that the clinic hit the mark. “What a great idea this clinic was!” said Mary Morgan, whose son Ethan is a running back for the See FOOTBALL on page 18 SISTERS AREA MEETING CALENDAR BOARDS, GROUPS, CLUBS Central Oregon Fly Tyers Guild 4th Saturdays, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. For location information: 541-549-2072.
