While all eyes were on the Milli Fire raging to the west of Sisters last week, Cloverdale firefighters caught a fire in a chicken coop before it could spread to an attached building. On Friday, August 18, Cloverdale firefighters were called to a reported structure fire at 17552 Plainview Ct. Callers reported a chicken coop attached to a house was on fire. Firefighters arrived to find that the burning coop was attached to the residence’s garage. With assistance from the Sisters-Camp Sherman fire district, firefighters were able to extinguish the fire with minimal damage to the garage. The chicken coop was a total loss, and numerous chickens succumbed to smoke and flames. Assistance was provided by the Black Butte Ranch and Crooked River Ranch fire districts who provided cover- age in the area during the fire. This fire occurred during the height of the Milli Fire, when local districts had increased staffing due to the large forest fire and the solar eclipse. The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Oregon State Fire Marshal’s office. 170 W. I was truly impressed by the dedication, effort, and support on display at SES yesterday when staff from all building came to help our ele- mentary staff unpacked their classroom. I also realized that the lack of access to our facil- ities for staff created a sense of urgency and I found staff working when they should have excused themselves. Eventually, I had to send all staff home due to the air qual- ity concerns.” Scholl told The Nugget that the district has taken steps to improve the air quality in the buildings, even as smoke from the Milli Fire (and other fires in Oregon) continues to hover across Sisters Country. “We installed carbon- based filters in all of the schools on Friday and over the weekend and today (Monday), we have seen a significant improvement in air quality in the build- ings,” Scholl reported. “They improve the air quality because they filter more of the particulates out of the air that we bring in from the outside.” Air quality is expected to remain a concern for several days as burnout operations continue on the Milli Fire and smoke from the massive Chetco Bar Fire in southwest Oregon continues to drift across the state.
