Wednesday, August 23, 2017 The Nugget Newspaper, Sisters, Oregon C O M M U N I T 3 Y Trails Alliance seeks Cycle Oregon volunteers Hundreds of cyclists will come rolling down the McKenzie Highway on September 16 (fire condi- tions permitting) on the final leg of the annual Cycle Oregon bike ride. By the time they hit Sisters they’ll be hungry. Sisters Trails Alliance is seeking 24 volunteers to work 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. getting ready for the riders, serving up lunch, and cleaning up afterwards. “They give you $2,000 for doing that, which is really nice,” said Ann Richardson of STA. “We’re donating that to Bike Park 242.” Bike Park 242 is a com- munity-based project to cre- ate dirt-track riding features for mountain bikers. There’s already a pump track on the grounds of Sisters Park & Recreation District, and design, materials. and fund- ing are being put in place to add technical skills features, “drop zones” and lines of jumps. One ordinary day, three years ago, he sat down in his studio and painted a tur- tle, but from the underside. This turtle needed some kind of support – so McGregor painted it hanging on a string of barbed-wire fence. This turtle wears a rather pained expression, no doubt, due to its precarious perch. Then, he decided to paint a bird next to the turtle on the wire. The bird he picked was By Helen Schmidling Correspondent Is there a term for ani- mals that share their famil- iar names? If you know the answer, please tell Dennis McGregor. Over the years, the Sisters artist and musician has painted hundreds – maybe thousands – of animals, birds, fish, and insects. He is widely known for his many illustra- tions for the Sisters Folk Festival, Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show, and Sisters Rodeo, among many others. Show shoots up its own smoke By Jodi Schneider McNamee Correspondent Cascade Avenue between Oak and Pine streets was taken back to a time when the “Old West” was alive and well. With 140 feet of Western town façade, folks did a double take and sat for a spell to watch the Deschutes Desperados, formerly The Pine Mountain Posse Reenactment Players, and a rowdy bunch of new players entertain with skits for the 5th annual Sisters Wild West Show last weekend. The Deschutes Desperados reenactment player Mick Howard, aka Mojave Mick, was back again as the town’s sheriff, ready to incarcerate the worst hombres. Howard has been in re-enactment for eight years and with involved in cowboy action shooting for over 20 years. “Re-enactments are only a small part of Pine Mountain Posse, which is the cowboy action shooting club that I belong to,” Howard told The Nugget. “We decided to sepa- rate ourselves as re-enactment players, so I came up with the name Deschutes Desperados.” The Single Action Shooting Society (SASS) is an international organiza- tion formed to preserve and promote the sport of cowboy action shooting, a competitive shooting sport that originated in Southern California. Spectators got to step back into the wild age of gunfight- ers, saloons, and cowboys, like a scene out of a classic Clint Eastwood Western that came alive. The Deschutes Desperados performed nine Western performances, skits, and shoot-outs. Before each show, event organizer Richard Esterman talked about safety and explained that the guns used are real, but there would be no real bullets, only black-pow- der blanks. However, the gunshots sounded real and the kids were advised to cover their ears — and they did, along with a few adults. On Saturday, the first shootout performance was at high noon and every hour until 5 p.m. See WILD WEST on page 30 SISTERS AREA MEETING CALENDAR BOARDS, GROUPS, CLUBS Central Oregon Fly Tyers Guild 4th Saturdays, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. For location information: 541-549-2072.
