School Supplies Shortage Sisters Les Schwab hosts the annual Sisters School Supply Drive with a collection bin, but the collection is quite low. There is a special need for the following: college-ruled spiral notebooks; college-ruled notebook paper; wide-ruled notebook paper; 24-count box of Crayola crayons; and 8-count Crayola water color paints. CPR and First Aid Class Sisters-Camp Sherman RFPD will offer the AHA “Heartsaver” CPR/AED module Friday, September 15 and the First Aid module Saturday, September 16 at the Sisters Fire Hall. The cost is $30 which includes a student workbook and completion card. Art in the Library The August art exhibit at the Sisters Library features kids’ art in the community room with the theme, “Build a Better World.” In addition, Wendy Birnbaum will be exhibiting her photography in the computer room. Lunch is served every Tuesday at noon at Sisters Community Church with a $3.50 suggested donation for those over 60. The espresso hour runs 11 a.m. to noon, and BINGO is played after lunch until 2:30 p.m. A free blood pressure clinic is offered the last Tuesday of the month from 11 a.m. to noon. SHS Freshmen Orientation Incoming freshman are invited to Sisters High School Monday, August 28 for new student orientation, running 7:45 a.m. to 3 p.m. Seniors and juniors serve as leaders and mentors, with large and small group activities of team-building and discussions. After lunch, students get locker assignments and run through a shortened version of their day. Bus routes will run in the morning and afternoon. Help us raise funds to assist families with free spay and neuter services, emergency medical assistance and more by dropping them off (in closed plastic bags, please) to the blue recycle bins on the front west porch at The Nugget. Caregivers’ Support Group A free support group for caregivers of those suffering with Alzheimer’s or other forms of dementia takes place at Sisters City Hall the third Tuesday of each month from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Sponsored by the Alzheimer’s Association, meetings provide emotional, educational, and social support. Open Computer Lab Every Tuesday from 10 a.m. to noon at the Sisters Library, all are welcome to come to the open computer lab to practice computer skills and get help from library staff. Home Repair with Habitat Sisters Habitat for Humanity is accepting applications for its home repair program (roof repair, weatherization, ramps, exterior painting, etc.). Applicants must own their home (not assessed at more than $200,000); have a need for improved housing; be able to repay a loan; partner with Habitat with sweat equity hours and have lived in Sisters for at least one year. New Student Registration Registration for new students in Sisters public schools will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. from August 22 through August 25; at Sisters Middle School and Sisters High School for youth entering those grades, but due to construction taking place at the elementary school, new Sisters Elementary School students will register at the district offi ce, 525 E. Cascade Ave. For additional information call 541-549-8521. Food Assistance at the Kiwanis Food Bank Your family may be eligible for food assistance at the Sisters Kiwanis Food Bank. Eligibility rules may be found online at fns.usda.gov/tefap or visit the food bank for complete information. The food bank is located at Main Avenue and Oak Street and is open once a week, every Thursday, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. You may also get cat and dog food weekly during those hours at no charge, provided by Furry Friends Foundation of Sisters. Book Corner Needs Books The supply at the Friends Book Corner is very low! Donations are gratefully accepted Tuesdays and Saturdays from 1 to 3 p.m. Please consider donating gently used books 10 years or newer; CDs, DVDs, and books on tape (but no cookbooks at this time). Interpretive Walk with Friends of the Metolius Saturday, August 26, 10 a.m. to noon, join Susan Prince in a walk from the Camp Sherman Bridge to Allingham Bridge and back. Learn about changes to the Metolius River area to enhance fi sh habitat and support native plants. Meet at the Camp Sherman bridge fi sh viewing platform.
