Mountain High Coins in Bend has tapped their long-standing expertise to create a unique artifact of the event: a black nickel challenge coin fea- turing a specially colorized image of the eclipsed sun’s corona with a map of the path of totality across Oregon on the reverse. “We did the black nickel route to keep the price point down ($20 as opposed to $125),” said Colleen McGrew of Mountain High Coins. She also noted that, unlike silver, the nickel presents no issues with tarnishing. They’ve also created T-shirts with a design that changes color in the sunlight. M c G r e w ’s p a r e n t s , Michael and Carolyn Graham, lived for many years on Holmes Road east of Sisters and they’ve operated Mountain High Coins in the same location on 3rd Street in Bend for the past 25 years. A family of numismatists, they have broad interests and exper- tise in all manner of coins and also in estate jewelry. The idea for the commem- orative coin hearkens back to a similar run they made in honor of the Bend Rockies several years ago. “We sold out,” McGrew said. “It was huge.” She and her husband, Dan, who designed the eclipse coin, thought there would be similar interest in a unique souvenir of the eclipse. They’ll have their products at eclipse events in Madras and on the coast.
