Wednesday, August 2, 2017 The Nugget Newspaper, Sisters, Oregon C O M M U N I T 3 Y Sisters Trails Alliance seeks ‘trail adopters’ Sisters Trails Alliance (STA) is recruiting volun- teers for their Adopt a Trail program. The goal of the program is better-maintained and safer trails through community ownership and stewardship. Trail adopters are the superheroes of our trail system. They do periodic inspection and minor main- tenance on an assigned sec- tion within the STA trail sys- tem and keep us up to date on trail conditions. Potential Adopters should have a mod- erate level of fitness to serve in this role, but no direct experience is necessary and See TRAILS on page 22 Volunteers sought for stream monitoring Upper Deschutes Watershed Council is host- ing their ninth stream sam- pling on Whychus Creek on Saturday, August 12 — and folks in Sisters are encour- aged to participate. “We’re actively recruit- ing volunteers for the event,” said Lauren Mork, stream monitoring coordinator for the Council. Volunteers will meet at Creekside Park in Sisters at 8:30 a.m. (coffee and snacks are provided). “We do a brief introduc- tion to UDWC and the stream restoration and steelhead and salmon reintroduction that are happening on Whychus Creek, followed by a sam- pling protocol training with aquatic entomologist Celeste Mazzacano,” Mork said. In teams of three or four, volunteers sample one or two sites along Whychus Creek. Sampling includes wading in the creek, using heels and hands to dislodge aquatic macroinvertebrates from the bottom of the stream, and transferring them from the net to sample bottles. Samples are accompa- nied by a stream habitat description and stream mea- surements. Sampling teams typically wrap up by 3 p.m. and return their samples to Creekside Park. Samples are sent to a lab for identification. The result- ing data allow us to under- stand how stream conditions are changing with restora- tion actions and a changing climate. Hoedown draws record turnout By Jodi Schneider McNamee Correspondent Hundreds of guests showed up for a record turn- out for the 2nd annual Sisters Rotary Hoedown. Folks dressed their Western best for the family-friendly event to enjoy live country-western entertainment by Dry Canyon Stampede, great food, a silent auction, live auction, and a raffle draw on Saturday evening. A vast indoor horse arena, located on Cloverdale Road, was donated for the evening by Julie and Vito Bartolotta. Hal Darcy, Rotarian and coordinator for the event, has been Sisters Rotary’s fun- draising chairman for three years. “Last year we had 375 people and it looks like this year we are sold out at over 500,” Darcy said. “We tried to keep the same format from the feedback that we received last year. But we tightened up our schedule and the pro- gram. Our goal was to do bet- ter at everything.” The event was a bulk fundraiser for the four non- profit organizations that were invited to partner with Sisters Rotary for the event. They were Seed to Table, Harmony Farm Sanctuary, Circle of Friends, and Sisters High School Flight Science Program. Each nonprofit had an information table and a color-coded silent auction table with items donated from artists and businesses around Sisters. Former Circle of Friends executive director Debbie Newport was on hand with new Executive Director Nicky Merritt. “We don’t have the capac- ity to put on an event like this,” Newport told The Nugget. “And when Rotary called us and invited us it was a wonderful surprise and an incredible partnership opportunity.” Hoyts Hardware & Building Supply donated a flatbed truck that was used as a stage for the country- western band Dry Canyon Stampede.
