Wednesday, July 19, 2017 The Nugget Newspaper, Sisters, Oregon C O M M U N I T 3 Y The Pandora moth is back in Sisters the Klamath elders indicated the caterpillars were a wel- come food item — when they appeared, which wasn’t that often. The last significant out- break in this area was in 1990 and ’91 when adult moths were found from Crescent all the way to Sisters. The Bend area saw most of them, but they did not defoliate the pines as in times past. And here the moths are with us again — noticeably flying about the lights of By Jim Anderson Correspondent Yes, those are Pandora moths flying about your porch lights at night. This isn’t the first time they’ve been in Oregon’s night skies, nor will it be the last. Pandora moths are cyclic in appearance, taking between four and five years between outbreaks. The earliest record of their numbers dates back to 1894 when federal Indian agents noticed the Klamath people roasting Pandora cat- erpillars. STA installs information kiosk Volunteers from Sisters Trails Alliance (STA) have upgraded signage and ame- nities for cyclists at Village Green Park. Visitors to Sisters will now find a new kiosk on the north side of the park with detailed information about the Oregon Scenic Bikeways within an hour’s drive of Sisters. The kiosk was built and donated by Kris Calvin of Earthwood Timber Frame Homes, installed by City of Sisters staff, led by Paul Bertagna, and refinished by STA volunteers. In addition, Bertagna and his team installed a Dero Fixit station on the east side of the park that includes all the tools necessary to per- form basic bike repairs and maintenance. The tools are securely attached to the stand which allows riders to hang a bike while they work on it. The station also includes a bike pump for cyclists to top up before taking off on a ride. Funding was provided by STA and through grants from the City of Sisters and the Deschutes County Commissioners Discretionary Fund for the maps and bike repair station. The Sisters Area Chamber of Commerce also assisted with the project, providing input and content for the layout of the signs and funding for the graphic design. Sisters Chamber Executive Director Judy Trego said, “Requests for cycling infor- mation have increased exponentially since the launch of the Scenic Bikeways pro- gram, and many of our local businesses are seeing increased spending from this sector. Having these maps and amenities at Village Green will provide not only informa- tion, but a welcoming experi- ence for cyclists coming to Sisters to start their ride.” A 2014 study commis- sioned by Travel Oregon and Oregon Parks & Recreation Department found that cyclists who rode the two sce- nic bikeways that originate in Sisters contributed $2.1 mil- lion to the Sisters economy. Statewide, cyclists riding the bikeways made expenditures of $12.4 million.
