Wednesday, June 28, 2017 The Nugget Newspaper, Sisters, Oregon C O M M U N I T 3 Y Guitar, banjo up for raffle through festival Two superb instruments are up for raffle at this year’s Sisters Folk Festival. The annual instrument raffle raises thousands of dol- lars to support the nonprofit’s work in the schools and com- munity. Ticket-buyers have a chance to own a world-class guitar and banjo while sup- porting Americana Project programming in the Sisters public schools. The money raised will provide children from pre-school through high school access to scholarships and classes in music and visual arts. The Breedlove Custom 2017 Sisters Folk Festival Parlor Guitar was crafted by the talented Breedlove build- ers in Bend. It was designed and built to be an ideal repre- sentation of the perfect “folk” guitar for this year’s Festival. The highly figured custom- stack myrtlewood back and sides have tremendous col- oration, figure, and visual appeal. This unique and stunning tonewood grows exclusively in this region, making the See GUITAR on page 22 No fireworks allowed in Sisters’ forests The Office of State Fire Marshal, Oregon fire service, Keep Oregon Green, the Pacific Northwest Wildfire Coordination Group, natural resource agencies, Oregon fireworks wholesalers, and safety experts encourage Oregonians to “Keep it Legal and Keep it Safe” when using fireworks. The 2017 Oregon fire- works sales season opened Friday, June 23 and runs through Thursday, July 6. The OSFM and their part- ners want everyone to know what fireworks are legal in Oregon, where they are permitted, and the important steps to take for fireworks safety. “I want to remind all Oregonians that consumer- legal fireworks can only be purchased from Oregon per- mitted fireworks retailers and stands,” said State Fire Marshal Jim Walker. “And regulations limit where those fireworks may be used.” July 4th holiday forest visitors are advised to leave all fireworks at home. The use of fireworks is prohibited on all national forestland, See FIREWORKS on page 21 PHOTO PROVIDED Long-time Sisters-Camp Sherman Fire District board member Don Boyd is retiring at the end of the month. Boyd retires from fire district board Long-time director for the Sisters-Camp Sherman Fire District, Don Boyd is retiring from the board when his term expires at the end of June 2017. Boyd began his service on the budget committee for the District in the 1990s, where he served several terms for the organization. In April 2002, Boyd was appointed to the board and served off and on until 2005 when he was elected for the position and has served until his retirement at the end of June 2017. Don has worked with three different fire chiefs: Chief Don Rowe, Chief Taylor Robertson and now Chief Roger Johnson. As a director, he saw the $2.5 million dol- lar bond measure go on the ballot for a remodel and new construction of the District’s main fire station and the subsequent completion and move-in as well as many operational and administra- tive changes during his time on the board. Boyd takes pride in his financial responsibility for the District, has reviewed thousands of checks over the years, and has been very active in the budget pro- cess including serving on the District’s internal budget committee, which is respon- sible for preparing the budget document for the formal bud- get committee each year. Boyd expressed hope that his successor (and other members of the board) will participate in the internal bud- get process in his absence and be very prudent and wise with the budget. “Two key ingredients contribute to our success,” he said. “Having the abil- ity to attract elite people to fill every position — and we have the very best people. Also, having an adequate budget to help provide the necessary facilities and equip- ment is important, and, thanks to the good people of Sisters Country, we have what we need. I feel very blessed to have served with all of you in helping make SCSFD the very best.” The board of directors pre- sented Boyd with a plaque on behalf of the board, the mem- bers and citizens of the Fire District at their regular meet- ing on Tuesday, June 20. Board President Chuck Newport said, “Don Boyd’s 15 years of service to the Sisters-Camp Sherman RFPD and the community of Sisters has been invaluable. His dedi- cation and attention to detail has helped steer this District to become one of the most recognized small districts in the state, and a pride of the Sisters community. The board and staff extend a heart-felt thank-you to Don and wish him and his wife, Joyce, the best.” Director Boyd’s posi- tion will be filled by Jack McGowan who was elected to the position in May.
