Wednesday, June 21, 2017 The Nugget Newspaper, Sisters, Oregon C O M M U N I T 3 Y Sisters Round-Up of Gems will rock Sisters Every year for the past few decades, the Sisters Round-Up of Gems has rolled into town for the Fourth of July weekend. This year, the roundup will be held June 30 through July 4 at Creekside Park. Hours are 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. through Monday, and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday. Gems including opal, Oregon sunstones, ruby, aquamarine, lapis, malachite, agates and more — both rough and cut — will line the vendor tables. Minerals, crys- tals, beads, stone carvings, jewelry, lapidary tools and equipment, meteorites and fossils from all regions of our world will sparkle brightly, waiting to find their home. Craftsmen, miners, art- ists, and rockhounds dig, cut, polish, set, transport and display all of these trea- sures for patrons to behold, take home, enjoy or to give as unique gifts. Perhaps the most enjoyable aspect of the event is engaging with all of the enthusiastic people who share a love for geology and rocks. Creekside Park is located at 504 S. Locust St. used tools needed for simple bike maintenance repairs, a manual pump, hanger arms on the top that will accom- modate most types of bikes, and a QR code on the front of the station that will take smart-phone users to a com- prehensive bike repair web- site. Each tool is secured to the station with braided stainless steel aircraft cables. The screwdrivers and Allen wrenches are on swivel con- nectors for easier use. The station was acquired by the Sisters Trails Alliance. • During a public hear- ing at last week’s Council Correspondent • Don’t forget the barbe- cue at City Hall on Thursday, June 22, 4:30 to 6:30 p.m., to meet the City Councilors, City staff, and new City Manager Brant Kucera. Her award brought the total Kiwanis grant awards past $75,000. Pruitt’s grant is per- haps the most unusual in the history of the program. Lori-Jean, with the aid of the Kiwanis grant, will be attending ATA Tattoo School in Salem. Her objective is to launch a career in cosmetic medical tattooing. There are a number of tattooing tech- niques that help patients. Procedures include skin camouflage to improve the appearance of persons with skin diseases. Scar camou- flage improves the appear- ance of patients injured in accidents, from burns or sur- geries. Tattoos can also help congenital disorders such as cleft palate or beauty marks. These are just a few exam- ples; there are many more physical imperfections that can be improved with cos- metic tattooing. ATA Tattoo School is an Oregon State certified school but students are not able to qualify for federal student loans. The Kiwanis grant allows Pruitt to pay her tuition and achieve her life-long goal of a profes- sional career that helps oth- ers. When she completes the program, she will take an Oregon exam to become a licensed cosmetic medical tattooist. Sisters Kiwanis awards career grants to Sisters area adults who are seeking a career change. This program, known as the Kiwanis Career Opportunity Fund (COF) assists adults (25 or older) who are financially unable to return to school or retrain for a career change. In recent years, Kiwanis has awarded grants to more than 30 local residents. Examples of recent grants include dental hygiene school, floral design train- ing, and vocational welding classes.
