do to position themselves
for a satisfactory peek at the
eclipse? Is it worth the time
and fighting possible heavy
traffic to get somewhere close
to the centerline of the total
phase of the eclipse? The
duration of totality in Madras,
the Painted Hills, Mitchell,
Unity and other locations
close to this centerline will
be two minutes or longer. The
maximum duration occurs in
Kentucky and will be about
2:40.
If you stay in Sisters you
will have only 30 seconds
of totality. At the northern-
most locations that you can
reach from Wilt Road or
Green Ridge Road, you will
have a duration of almost two
minutes.
From Wilt Road this will
involve some rough sections
of road, but a closer loca-
tion called “Squaw Flat”
before the road gets really
rough may be a good place to
observe and will have a total-
ity duration of about 1:30.

Some folks will fly in,
others will drive their clas-
sic cars and hot rods. And
some will run. The Fourth
of July Fly-in at the Sisters
Airport is a fundraiser for
flight scholarships. This
year’s theme is “Sound of
Speed.”
The fundraising Sound of
Speed 5K Run/Walk will take
place at the Sisters Airport
on Tuesday, July 4, with par-
ticipants hitting the runway
at 8 a.m. Cost is $30; pro-
ceeds from the run go to the
Sisters High School Swim
Team.
Participants can register
at www.ultrasignup.com;
www.sistersairport.com/
july4flyin.php or from 6:30
to 7:30 a.m. the morning of
the race.
The annual fly-in fea-
tures a pancake breakfast
for $5, and a full day of
events.
