Wednesday, May 10, 2017 The Nugget Newspaper, Sisters, Oregon 21 Anson Ricker Sisters High School April 2017 Student of the Month For Anson Ricker, the key to success in school is keeping in contact with teachers and staying on top of his work — “trying to stay as engaged as possible with your studies, not just coasting along.” That was challenging this year, as the young ath- lete suffered a broken neck in a skiing accident in January. But Anson persevered, and his close rela- tionship with teachers helped. He is willing to stay after class to make sure he understands his material — and the teachers at Sisters High School are right there to help. The relationship is “special and supportive,” and “very nurturing to my education,” he says. He has been accepted to Westminster College in Salt Lake City, Utah, where he plans to study jour- nalism with a possible minor in business. He also expects to be on skis again by next winter. Anson made a point to offer thanks to his mother and father and to the Tonto Crew in their efforts “to make the best out of our time.” “Anson embraces life with compassion and kindness. He brings maturity and presence to his interactions, and his sense of adventure is contagious. I am impressed with his passion for life and his diligence in pushing himself to grow. Last year he chose to challenge himself by taking chemistry, and approached the content with grit and commitment. He embraces life with gusto, and his enthusiasm inspires oth- ers. I wish you the best, Anson!” – Rima Givot “A true miracle! Anson is one of those solid students who comes from a solid family. Most of us parents want our kids to be whatever they want to be as long as they’re just fun- damentally good humans. Anson has a great heart and is a strong student. He’s recovering from a tremendous accident and the way he’s handling himself is truly a testament to his tenacious character. We want our Outlaws to be gritty, but Anson has taken it to a whole new level. Congratulations!” – Joe Hosang Th ere is no better way to spend time than visiting with Anson Ricker. He is one of the most thoughtful, sincere, kind students I have ever taught. He is a pure lover of life. I asked him what he wants to be when he grows up and he said, ‘I want to be happy.’ Th at sums it up for Anson Ricker.” – Tony Cosby “Anson Ricker is a young man who lives inspirationally. When I think of him, I think of the words perseverance, genuineness and passionate. He is an example of someone who shows that perseverance is not a long race, but many short races, one after another. When dealing with adversi- ty, he calmly assesses the situation, sets goals and takes pas- sionate steps forward. He doesn’t worry, but fi nds ways to gain strength. Anson’s genuine attitude and love of life give him the ability to positively touch the lives of those he comes in contact with. He is truly a gem. I believe in this young man and know that he will live his life with purpose.” – Samra Spear Anson’s strongest attributes are his resilience and tenac- ity. Despite having suff ered a debilitating neck injury, he has remained committed to working on his Chinese, either from home or coming to class. He’s an amazing young man, and a joy to work with. Way to go Anson! You deserve this recognition.” – David Perkins These businesses have joined The Nugget in supporting our youth and their accomplishments by co-sponsoring the Student of the Month program.
