Wednesday, April 19, 2017 The Nugget Newspaper, Sisters, Oregon Poet laureate to visit Sisters schools Former Children’s Poet Laureate Kenn Nesbitt is scheduled to visit Sisters Elementary School and Sisters Middle School on Tuesday, April 25 and Wednesday, April 26. Nesbitt, known for his humorous style, will be on hand to help students cele- brate National Poetry Month. Thanks to a grant from the Sisters-based Roundhouse Foundation, Nesbitt will present at school assem- blies at each school about his writing, poetry and publishing. He will also host a writing workshop for fourth- and fifth-grade students and a publishing workshop for sixth-grade students. Parents are invited to a parent presentation on Tuesday, April 25, at 6 p.m. at Sisters Library. Originally a computer programmer from California, Nesbitt wrote his first poem, “Scrawny Tawny Skinner,” in 1994 after attending a dinner with a friend whose 4-year-old daughter did absolutely everything she could to get out of eating dinner. He wrote his first book of poems in 1997 and has since published 18 books. Most recently he selected poems for the anthology “One Minute Till Bedtime: 60 Second Poems to Send You Off to Sleep.” He was selected as the Children’s Poet Laureate 2013-2015 from the Poetry Foundation. According to an interview on PoetryFoundation.com, Nesbitt says his inspiration for his poems is primarily “…to get kids excited about reading. I want them to have as much fun with books as is humanly possible.” Sisters Elementary School kindergarten teachers and administrators are hosting Kindergarten Round-Up on Friday, April 28, for all incoming kindergartners in the 2017-2018 school year. For the past several years the staff at SES has hosted this event to help families get prepared for starting the next chapter with their young children. All students will meet with the kindergarten teachers and parents will have a chance to hear from the principal and other dis- trict personnel on what their kids’ first year of school will look like. “Kindergarten Round-Up is a great way for us to begin to get to know incoming kin- dergarteners and have them see our classrooms,” said kindergarten teacher Sara Elliott. For families with stu- dents who will be enter- ing kindergarten in the 2017-2018 school year, parents will need to stop in or call Sisters Elementary School at 541-549-8981 to sign up for a time to par- ticipate; either 8:30 a.m. or 1:30 p.m. All students need to be 5 years of age by the begin- ning of school and be up to date on all of their immuni- zations. More information on district immunization policy can be found at www.ssd6. org. For more information on Kindergarten Round-Up contact Sisters Elementary School at 541-549-8981.
