Wednesday, April 12, 2017 The Nugget Newspaper, Sisters, Oregon 21 Sisters Habitat hosts National Women Build Sisters Habitat volunteers and future Habitat homeown- ers will work alongside a con- struction crew of women from our community during Habitat for Humanity’s National Women Build Week, May 9-13. Women from Sisters are invited to devote at least one day to building decent and affordable housing for local families. More than 17,000 women, including Lowe’s Heroes vol- unteers, are expected to vol- unteer at construction sites across the country as part of Habitat’s 2017 National Women Build Week. Sisters H a b i t a t ’s Construction Manager Darleene Snider will lead the team of women volunteers at the Village Meadows subdi- vision (corner of McKinney Butte Road and Desert Rose Loop). This is her fourth year as a team leader and she is excited to work with women in the community landscaping two homes and working on construction on another. “I’m always amazed at the excitement and enthusiasm this event brings to the work- site. Everyone is eager to help and we have a lot of fun, too,” she said. Future homeowner Sharyn Benson will be out on the job- site as well. “I can’t wait to work alongside some old friends and make new friends as we help build my house during Women Build Week,” she said. We cotldn’t do it withott the stpport of otr commtnity and the help from otr regtlar voltnteers to help make this event the stccess it is. — Marie Clasen “It takes a village to put on a big event such as this,” said Marie Clasen, Sisters Habitat’s Volunteer and Family Services Manager. “We couldn’t do it without the support of our community and the help from our regular volunteers to help make this event the success it is.” Lowe’s helped launch National Women Build Week in 2008 to empower women to advocate for affordable hous- ing and spotlight the home- ownership challenges faced by many. Each year, Lowe’s provides the support of their employee volunteers. “Through our partnership with Habitat and support of National Women Build Week, Lowe’s empowers women to get involved in their com- munities, learn construction skills and make a meaningful impact,” said James Frison, Lowe’s director of community relations. “We’re grateful to all the women in Sisters who will volunteer this week to help build decent and afford- able housing.” Interested volunteers can register for a 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. shift during build days May 9-13. Those who vol- unteer are asked to attend an orientation on Wednesday, May 3, at 5:30 p.m. at Sisters Library. On Saturday, May 6 from 10 a.m. to noon a clinic on “How to Safely Use Power Tools” will be offered. Wilson was the first to travel to Europe and to leave the U.S. for an extended period of time, but Theodore Roosevelt visited the Panama Canal construction site in 1906 and William Howard Taft visited Mexico briefly in 1909.
