18 Wednesday, February 15, 2017 The Nugget Newspaper, Sisters, Oregon ORDINANCE: Rules should make snow removal more effective Esthetician makes contest finals Karen Keady’s clients at Essentials Skin Care & Spa in Sisters know that she can work wonders on skin that takes a beating in the Central Oregon climate. Now her work is being recognized on an international stage. “Last fall I entered an international Skin Games Competition,” Keady told The Nugget.” It involved an eight-week series of video diaries with a model, and a case study portfolio, of the treatments and results I had hoped to achieve. I had to send, weekly, a video diary of treatments, results, products used, plus before-and-after shots of my model.” The work paid off: Keady has made the finals of the competition, set for this April in San Ramon, California. In the finals, she will present her case study before a panel of judges. Keady made the final cut in the category of Age Management, and, since there was no “organic” category, she also entered the Open category. Her model was Robin Bentz, who is nearing 60. Keady developed a detailed protocol based on Robin’s needs and desires. “Robin and I just had fun with it, and lo and behold…,” Keady said. Oregon has stricter rules than many other states on what can be used for skin peels, which con- strained Keady’s protocol. Nevertheless, the work was clearly successful — and reflects a grow- ing interest in an organic approach to warding off the effects of aging and exposure. “More and more people are wanting organic,” Keady said. “They don’t want to go under the knife; they don’t want Botox… I am so excited about this; it vali- dates so much.” The skincare aspect of the project was actu- Award-winning natural results... ally the easy part. Karen had help from her hus- band, John, and from Sisters film- maker Eli Pyke in setting up and effectively film- ing the required weekly two-min- ute video diary. “It’s a slow wi nt er, and I want some excite- ment,” Keady told The Nugget. And it seems that she’s got it. Essentials Skin Care & Spa is located at 492 E. Main Ave. Call 541-480-1412 for more information. ... for Robin Bentz. Worried about MOISTURE due to ICE DAMS? The new ordinance approved by the Council allows the city manager to declare and terminate an Emergency Snow Removal Operation. During the emer- gency, on-street parking will not be allowed and the City has authority to remove vehicles and fine viola- tors. Because this is a new ordinance, there will be a grace period during which the City will issue warnings with time given to remove a vehicle. New signs will be posted throughout town indicating that when snow reaches four inches or more of accumula- tion, the area becomes a no- parking zone and cars must be moved. Another provision of the ordinance states that no person will sweep, throw, shovel, push, plow or deposit any snow/ice from private property, sidewalks, and/ or driveways onto a street, sidewalk, or other public right-of-way. The object of the new ordinance is to allow the Public Works Department to do a more efficient and thor- ough job of clearing snow from city streets the first time the plows are out. This is expected to save money and time for the City and provide safer streets for vehicle and pedestrian traffic. The existing regula- tions for private streets, sidewalks adjacent to busi- nesses, and the streets in Pine Meadow Village remain unchanged. A copy of the new ordi- nance is available at City Hall and will eventually be included on the City website under municipal codes.
