Wednesday, January 18, 2017 The Nugget Newspaper, Sisters, Oregon 23 Lauren Wattenburg Sisters High School December 2016 Student of the Month Lauren Wattenburg doesn’t make school easy on herself. A dedicated ballet dancer, she travels to Tualatin every weekend to work in a pre-professional troupe through Northwest Dance Theatre. Her dance endeavors mean she miss- es a day of school every week. Yet she maintains both her grades and her participation through a combina- tion of personal dedication and the efforts of the school to make things work. She uses FaceTime to partici- pate in classes when she can’t actu- ally be there, and she stepped up to serve as co-coordinator for commu- nications for the Associated Student Government. Lauren credits Sisters High School for helping to make it all work out. She plans to continue to dance in college and — recognizing that ballet is never a lifetime career — she plans to study physical therapy or educa- tion as potential career options. “Lauren is one of those rare students a teacher is lucky enough to come in contact with. She has incredible insight, motivation, and passion. She is continually illustrating that if you clearly defi ne long-range goals you aspire to, you will fi nd that all the obstacles in your way will become hills instead of mountains. Lauren is the kind of person who makes those around her better. Her absence after she gradu- ates will be felt here at SHS, but we all know that not only will she continue to positively infl uence people, but that she will be an asset to any organization, group, or team.” – Samara Spear “Lauren is a true Outlaw. She has a very unique situation that requires her to be out of the building on a regular basis, yet she worked diligently to remain connected to the school, her friends and her teachers. She took an ac- tive leadership role with our student govern- ment, she’s a strong student, and she’s always so cheerful and positive. We are grateful for how Lauren enhances our school culture.” – Principal Joe Hosang “Lauren is a remarkable student in so many ways: She is always remarkably prepared for class. All of her academic work – even prac- tice assignments which she knows won’t be graded – are done to a remarkable standard of excellence. Lauren was a precocious freshman, and is as a senior a remarkably mature and responsible young adult. But perhaps Lau- ren’s most remarkable trait is the wonderfully generous and smiling attitude she infuses into SHS each and every day. Congratulations, Lauren! I am so glad for having gotten to know you at SHS!” – Rob Corrigan “Lauren is one of the hardest-working peo- ple I have ever known. She is responsible and appreciative. Lauren has the ability to be both fi ercely determined yet maintain a sense of hu- mor and fi t in well with any group. I think Lauren has helped me and my classes as much or more than I’ve helped her over her time in SHS. She is always an example to everyone around her of how to take the most eff ective approach given just about any circumstance. Lauren’s presence has motivated me and her classmates to be our best. I am so grateful for the opportunity to be one of her teachers. Lau- ren is a wonderful person.” – Daniel O’Neill “Lauren Wattenburg strives to achieve ex- cellence in all aspects of her life. From danc- ing competitively to taking the most rigorous courses at Sisters High School, Lauren seeks challenging experiences through which she can grow the most. She has continued to demon- strate excellence in her academic classes while juggling the high demands of rigorous dance training at a studio in Portland, three hours from our community. Lauren also works to serve others locally through active participa- tion in school-based community service. Her smile and positive attitude warm those around her. Congratulations, Lauren!” – Rima Givot These businesses have joined The Nugget in supporting our youth and their accomplishments by co-sponsoring the Student of the Month program.
