Wednesday, January 18, 2017 The Nugget Newspaper, Sisters, Oregon City Sisters shelter is seeking board members snapshot The Sisters Cold Weather Shelter and Homeless Coalition is seeking experi- enced, committed and pas- sionate community members to form its board of directors. The Sisters Cold Weather Shelter has been a Sisters community success story. Halfway into their first month of operation, the shelter is currently serving 12 guests each night. These efforts have brought together hun- dreds of community members with the intention to offer safety and security for those in the Sisters community in need. With interest in fundrais- ing, application for non- profit status and more on the horizon, the coalition seeks an experienced and engaged board to lead with inten- tion and offer direction for the future of this community movement. Those who have a pas- sion for service, a heart for the Sisters homeless commu- nity and experience serving on a board or committee are invited to a board selection meeting set for Thursday, January 26, 3:30 to 5 p.m. at Sisters Westside Church, 442 Trinity Way. If you are interested in joining the board, send an email of interest to Sisters Cold Weather Shelter co-chair, Lois Kaping, prior to the meeting at Loiskaping@bendbroadband. com. By Sue Stafford Correspondent • Free sand and sandbags are available in the park- ing lot at City Hall for any- one concerned about flood- ing on their property as the snow melts. Individuals must fill their own sand- bags. • Compass Commercial has been selected by the Deschutes National Forest as the real estate broker to act as the representing bro- kerage firm for the sale of approximately 66 acres of the Sisters Ranger District site off Highway 20 in Sisters. The property is partitioned into three parcels and is offered as one or more par- cels. The highest and best use is generally considered to be a mix of commercial and residential. There are more than 2,000 feet of highway frontage. • Work on the con- tract with Knife River for the Highway 20 round- about is being conducted this month, with work on the roundabout to begin in February. Public Works and ODOT are hopeful the snow will have receded by then. But unlike many others, I did not have to go outside in it. I just watched from my cozy mobile; that is, until my furnace quit and it was 37 degrees inside. So much for cozy. Thank God, Jerry Grecco was still going strong, as he was 18 years ago, the first time he fixed my furnace. Many thanks Jerry. As the snow continued to pile up on my old roof, I was reminded many times how lucky I was to live in Sisters, Oregon, and have so many wonderful friends. So for all their kindness and help, I would like to say Thank you: Julie at City Hall; Dave Vitelle of Bear Mountain Fire, who sent his crew twice to get the weight off my roof; and our great fire department who came at 6 a.m. to help with more snow removal. Many thanks to Bill Hull and Kent Jones who came to help me; Oregon Department of Fish & Wildlife for dispatching that poor young doe that stayed in my carport for two weeks with a broken hip — she no longer suffers; the American Red Cross who called me (at the request of the fire department) to see if I needed to leave the property because if my roof collapsed I would be trapped, as both exits would be blocked. I said thank you but Missy (my cat) and I would stay for now. And to Mike Schroeder, who cleared my driveway twice so my caregiver could get to me. Oh yes, that is why I could sit up and watch the snow pile up! I have been recovering from a hip replacement, so a big thank-you and God bless you all. I can’t wait till we have green grass and flow- ers, so Big Red (my car) can try out her rebuilt engine and my new hip. And a special thanks to my caregiver Angie Hoff, who drives from Powell Butte four days a week to care for me through At Home Care Group. Dr. Thomas R.
