Wednesday, January 4, 2017 The Nugget Newspaper, Sisters, Oregon Class prepares locals to mentor children Local student featured in ad campaign Central Oregon Partnerships for Youth (COPY), a program of the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office, is offering a class to prepare volunteers to become mentors for children with an incarcerated parent. After initial training and comprehensive back- ground checks, volunteers are matched with children in Sisters that share similar interests and activities and commit to spending a few hours a week together for a minimum of one year. This time is often spent going to community events, working Nancy Montecinos, a stu- dent at Sisters High School, is being featured this week as part of a statewide public education support campaign, “The Promise of Oregon.” The “Promise” campaign, which officially debuted in November 2014, aims to cre- ate public support for K-14 education, to help meet the state’s 40-40-20 goals and lift student achievement and graduation rates. The Promise campaign also showcases dis- tricts whose cutting-edge pro- grams are preparing students for careers and college. Montecinos is one of four students statewide who will be featured prominently this week on the campaign on homework, attending art programs, participating in sports, or simply hanging out and talking. On Saturday, January 14, COPY will offer an orienta- tion/training class. This six- hour class covers program pol- icies, how to establish a men- tor relationship, the impact incarceration has on families, and communication skills. There is no cost to attend. PORTLAND (AP) — The Oregon Court of Appeals has reversed the conviction of a wheelchair user who had been found guilty of driv- ing under the influence of intoxicants. James Greene of Waldport was arrested in November 2012 after entering a cross- walk in a motorized wheel- chair and striking the side of a moving pickup. Police determined he was impaired by alcohol and drugs, and a jury convicted him of drunken driving. Deschutes County patrol deputies and detectives responded to the hospital and to the original scene in Sisters and conducted an investigation. The Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office served a search warrant at the resi- dence, located in the 500 block of South Pine Street in Sisters. According to sheriff’s detectives, the investigation revealed that Peter Kanzig stabbed Kyle Benhower multiple times causing serious injuries. Benhower was treated by SCMC staff and was reported on Friday to be in stable con- dition at SCMC. “As a result of this inves- tigation and evidence that was obtained, Mr. Kanzig was arrested and lodged at the Deschutes County Adult Jail on charges of attempted murder, assault in the first degree and unlawful use of a weapon,” Sergeant Don Manning reported. Kanzig’s total bail is set at $360,000. The investigation is con- tinuing. In its opinion Thursday, the Appeals Court decided legislators only intended to have wheelchairs treated like bicycles in that narrow cir- cumstance, and users should be considered pedestrians when in a crosswalk.
