Wednesday, December 21, 2016 The Nugget Newspaper, Sisters, Oregon C O M M U N I T 3 Y Sisters man dies from hypothermia in car A Sisters man died of hypothermia while sleeping in his car over the weekend. According to Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office reports, a citizen called the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office on Saturday, December 17, at 3:30 p.m. to request a welfare check on a homeless person, who was living in a white sta- tion wagon on Rail Way near Arrowleaf Trail near McDonald’s. A deputy responded to the location and found Edward Carlton Fones, 39, dead inside the vehicle. Personnel from the Sisters- Camp Sherman Fire District also responded to the scene. The Deschutes County Medical Examiner’s Office and detectives from the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office Detective Division responded to conduct a death investigation. The death was initially See HYPOTHERMIA on page 27 Winter storm smacks Sisters hard By Ron Thorkildson Correspondent On Wednesday, December 14, Old Man Winter took dead aim on Central Oregon and dealt the region a stagger- ing blow. The wintery blast closed schools, federal and state offices, as well as many busi- nesses. For several days fol- lowing the storm, citizens were still digging their way out of the massive snowfall in an attempt to regain some sense of normalcy. Forecasters at the National Weather Service (NWS) office in Pendleton began to take notice of a rather disorganized mass of clouds in the eastern Pacific Ocean about 700 miles west of cen- tral California. It was the result of an extremely moist southwesterly flow of sub- tropical air that was start- ing to show some organiza- tion. The developing system was mentioned in the 10:09 p.m. PST forecast discussion for Sunday, December 11. The concern was that if this moisture-ladened air made landfall far enough north, it would overrun the deep cold that was already in place over Washington and Oregon, pro- ducing significant snowfall. Winter recital brings down the house By Jodi Schneider McNamee Correspondent Sisters Dance Academy winter recital, “Celebrations Around the World,” dazzled a full house at the Sisters High School Auditorium on Saturday, as dancers ages 3 to 18 performed ballet, jazz, tap, hip-hop, Broadway and contemporary; wearing bright colorful costumes depicting celebrations around globe. Exquisitely costumed per- formers depicted Christmas, Hanukkah, The Chinese New Year, St. Patrick’s Day and much more in a diversity-themed event. “The reason I came up with this theme is that at this time of year most of us focus on Christmas, yet there are so many other cultural and religious observances in the world to celebrate,” said Lonnie Liddell, owner and dance instructor at Sisters Dance Academy. This year there was a unique aspect that pulled in the audience for a full under- standing of each number performed. Volunteer Ann Alisa Duerden projected imagery on stage behind the dancers representing a particular cul- ture or celebration, making each number flow together with the music. “The imagery empha- sized what the dancers were doing,” Liddell said. As people from around the world prepare to celebrate Christmas, the decorating of the Christmas tree is a time- less and beloved traditions and the crowning moment is placing the final piece atop the tree.
