Wednesday, October 19, 2016 The Nugget Newspaper, Sisters, Oregon C O M M U N I T 3 Y Halloween Parade set for Sisters streets Every year, late in the afternoon of October 31, motorists on their way through Sisters get caught in a traffic jam. They are unsuspecting casualties of the annual Sisters Rotary Halloween Parade, a happy event that sees hundreds of costumed young children, accompanied by their par- ents or caregivers, trick-or- treating among businesses in town. The Rotary Club partners with the Sisters Library to promote, organize, and lead the event. It will be held on Halloween afternoon, with the first groups departing from Fir Street Park (at the corner of Fir Street and Main Avenue) at 3 p.m. Children must register for the event, and registration forms are available at the library and Sisters Elementary School. For last-minute participants, there will be a registration table at the park on the day of the parade. Participants are also asked to bring a non-perishable food item for the Sisters Kiwanis See PARADE on page 23 PHOTO PROVIDED Students and first responders participated last week in a major region-wide disaster drill. Disaster drill tests readiness Write-in iandidate in bid for iouniil seat By Sue Stafford Correspondent After seeing there were only three candidates running for three Sisters City Council seats, Kathryn Lindbloom was convinced by friends to start a write-in campaign. Lindbloom told The Nugget, “My agenda is to keep Sisters Sisters.” She said other than that, she has no specific agendas. She loves living in Sisters and wishes to see it continue as a special place to live. She does think there are several current issues facing the new Council, the first being to conduct a “reason- able search for a city manager. “We need to find someone who wants to live in the city,” and “who holds the same val- ues we do.” The potential sale of the Forest Service property at the west end of town is an issue that Lindbloom thinks requires major input from the citizens. She thinks the Council needs to listen to the ideas and concerns of the res- idents, without having their own minds already made up. See CANDIDATE on page 30 By Ceili Cornelius Correspondent Some 24 Sisters High School (SHS) students and 79 other students from Bend, Redmond, Prineville and Culver headed to Redmond early Friday morning, October 14, to participate in a simulated plane-crash. The event served as training for EMTs and paramedics. All the high school stu- dents were “victims” of the crash, and upon arrival were assigned an injury they were instructed to act out. Once assigned their injury, each student got “mou- laged” — made up to create an “injury” that appeared as real as possible. SHS student Ashley Adams had a severe compound femur fracture that looked startlingly real. Once all the first respond- ers arrived at Redmond Fairgrounds, students were transported by bus to the “crash-site” just east of the Redmond Airport. Upon arrival, students were told where they should go, accord- ing to the severity of the student’s injury. Most were about 100 feet away from the crash-site, where there was metal and scrap burning to make the scene seem as real as possible. Every student lay on the ground and would act out their injury. Once a first responder got to the student, they had to act as if they were really injured. The first responders would triage the patient and assign a certain color according to the sever- ity of the injury. Most stu- dents were of either “red” or “yellow” levels of urgency — critical or serious. Most were transported to the triage site on backboards and in neck braces. The students then waited for transport, with EMTs acting out treatment of their injury. A couple students were strapped to gurneys and put in the back of an ambulance. For SHS students this opportunity granted them extra credit and job-shadow hours for the EMS Fire class and Health Occupations class taught by Heather Johnson. “Whenever my students See DISASTER on page 24 SISTERS AREA MEETING CALENDAR BOARDS, GROUPS, CLUBS Al-Anon Monday, noon, Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church; Wednesday, 6 p.m., Episcopal Church of the Transfi guration. 541-549-8737 or 541-549-1527.
