Now it’s getting its own expression of the visual arts as well, with a mural painted by nationally renowned Sisters artist Paul Alan Bennett. Bennett described the work as he painted the west wall of the building last week. He noted that the designs at the foot of the mural are based on cowboy boot toe designs. Running up the middle of the mural is a conga line that forms a tree. That represents the sense of community that The Belfry creates in Sisters. The lack of wide open spaces on the board-and-bat surface poses a challenge for the artist, and he’s made some changes as he goes along. “It’s been a complex assignment because of all the variables,” he said. “It’s been fun though. One of the men was hit in the chest by the deer’s antlers — not quite gored but close.” Though deer are prey ani- mals, they can be extremely dangerous when threatened — with very sharp hooves and antlers on bucks. A deer is fully capable of kicking a dog to death, and humans can be at risk of injury, too. That is Clarke’s primary con- cern, though she noted that the injured deer must have limped off to die a slow and agonizing death from its injuries. “I called the police, but there’s really not much they can do,” Clarke noted. The elementary school playing fields are a tempt- ing area for people to bring their dogs — but it is not a dog park. Visitors, especially those from urban areas, may not be aware that there is a potential issue with the deer. “I don’t know who these folks are — if they’re visi- tors,” Clarke said. To avoid conflicts, dog owners should keep their dogs on a leash and under control, avoiding brushy areas that may be deer bed- ding habitat, and cleaning up after their pets.
