‘Haydown’
By Sue Stafford

by attending the Equine
Outreach Horse Rescue 2nd
Annual Harvest Haydown.
The event is a fundraiser for
the horses and will help to
cover the costs of winter hay.

event set for noon to 6 p.m. at
the Equine Outreach Ranch,
63220 Silvis Rd., Bend.
Sheriff Shane Nelson
will discuss animal law and
the work being done by
Deschutes County. Retired
veterinarian Dr. Larry
Dresher will answer ques-
tions about animal care.
There will be some-
thing fun for everyone: kids’
activities, pony cart rides,
face painting, horse demos,
live music by Riley’s Range
Benders and Appaloosa, food

Brewing beer, Tumalo Cider
Co. hard cider, hay ride tours,

silent auction items. The offi-
cial greeter will be Hank, the
big, friendly Clydesdale.
On Friday afternoon,
September 30, in the Sisters
Library community room,
the world of raptors will
come alive when longtime
local naturalist Jim Anderson
shares his extensive knowl-
edge with an illustrated forum
on Oregon raptors.
Starting at 1 p.m., the art-
ists and photographers who
have their work in the cur-
rent raptor exhibit will be on
hand in the community room
to talk about how they created
the images. Anderson will
begin the raptor program at
about 1:30 p.m.
As Anderson shows pic-
tures of the northern pygmy
owl, the smallest of Oregon’s
owls, the soaring owl, the
largest, as well as soar-
ing hawks, northern har-
rier, osprey, accipiters (bird
hawks), eagles, and vultures,
the audience will be able
to ask questions and make
comments.
Anderson and his wife,
Sue, will also talk about their
work helping to conduct a
statewide golden eagle sur-
vey with the Oregon Eagle
Foundation.

Anderson recalled.
A lasting connection

uncle Ben took me to the

to raptors came when
Anderson’s grandfather made
him eat a great horned owl
he shot when he was about
12. His adult passion started
when he arrived in Oregon
and discovered the “govern-
ment trappers” were killing
eagles and hawks with their
1,080 poison stations.
