Wednesday, September 21, 2016 The Nugget Newspaper, Sisters, Oregon C O M M U N I T 3 Y New teachers at Sisters Elementary School By erin Borla Correspondent Sisters Elementary School welcomed three new teachers this fall. Students welcomed Ashleigh Thomas, replacing longtime P.E. teacher Mark Lamont; Danielle Pulliam as a new third-grade teacher and Ashley Bye as the new Title Teacher for both reading and math. Both the P.E. and title position replaced staff who have moved on from the Sisters School District. Pulliam’s position is new to the District — added this year to help keep class sizes small as promised by District personnel. Superintendent Curt Scholl credits the pass- ing of a bond in May, which helped the District pay off the full-faith and credit obli- gation and put that money directly into the classrooms, for the third-grade teaching position. Pulliam began her teach- ing career overseas in Taiwan teaching English to young children. She then moved back to the states and taught many English As A Second Language (ESL) classes in See teaCHerS on page 24 Correspondent The sky is the limit for students in Sheryl Yeager’s classes at Sisters High School (SHS). T h a t ’s b e c a u s e s h e teaches two sections of Flight Science, and the 50 students who are enrolled could be well on their way to having a pilot’s license by next spring. “It’s not very common,” Yeager said. “I didn’t even know anything like this existed.” Well-wishers came out to support Justin Veloso (right) in his cancer fight. Community rallies for Justin Veloso By erin Borla SHS flight class has new instructor By Steve Kadel photo by erin borla Correspondent She worked as a substi- tute teacher at SHS and other Central Oregon schools last year. When Sisters School District advertised for a flight instructor, Yeager had all the credentials — including an appropriately famous last name. She’d had a pilot’s license since 1999, was a certificated Oregon teacher, and she lived locally. Her takeoff as a full- time Outlaw instructor fell neatly into place beginning See Yeager on page 26 “There is so much love in this room.” That’s what one event- goer said to Justin Veloso as Dennis McGregor and The Spoilers hit the stage at the Belfry last Thursday night after a live auction raised over $27,000 for the 28-year- old’s cancer treatment and recovery. Veloso, a lifetime musi- cian and drummer who gradu- ated from Sisters High School in 2006, was diagnosed with thyroid cancer in February. In March, he had surgery to remove his thyroid and some lymph nodes and is on the road to recovery with a life- time of hormone replacement drugs in his future. After Veloso’s diagnosis the community rallied around him and planned this benefit evening for the young man. Local business owner Jennifer McCrystal, along with Angeline Rhett, Katy Yoder, Benji Nagel, Carys Wilkens, Audrey Tehan, Maren Burck and several other volunteers planned the evening. Dinner was coor- dinated by volunteers and included everything from curry to gluten-free shep- herd’s pie and desserts. According to volunteer Katy Yoder, the group initially wasn’t sure how it was all going to get pulled together — but it did. “From the food to the donations to the auction to everyone that showed up,” she said. “It was beautiful to see people from all different generations in Sisters come out for this event.” The evening began with Justin performing with one of his drum students, 6-year-old Frankie Borla. Then Veloso played his own drum set along with keyboardist Andy Armer. An emotional Veloso shared his gratitude and thanks for the community supporting him through this effort. He kept it short in front of the crowd and instead offered personal thank-yous to individuals throughout the night.
