14 Wednesday, September 21, 2016 The Nugget Newspaper, Sisters, Oregon Slow- Outlaws crush the Cowboys cooking makes for delectable feast By rongi Yost Correspondent Sisters Park & Recreation District (SPRD) brings the second Buried Beef & Brew Feast Saturday, September 24, at Fir Street Park. The star attraction at SPRD’s Buried Beef & Brew event is the BEEF. Craig Rullman, who will oversee the 12-hour roasting process, described the method: “You dig a hole in the ground and you create a big bed of coals,” he said. “You want those coals to be as coal-y as you can possibly get ’em.” The meat is treated with specialty rubs, then wrapped in water-soaked burlap, then foil. It’s put in the ground and covered for a very slow roasting. “It’s a long, slow cook,” Rullman explained. That’s what makes the beef so extraordinarily tender and flavorful. “Twelve hours later, if everything goes right and the planets line up, it’s finger- lickin’ good,” Rullman said. Buried Beef & Brew starts at 5:30 p.m. with the serv- ing of the food and brews, then Dry Canyon Stampede will get your feet moving, your hands clapping and your voices singing. This event is sponsored by Bank of the Cascades and Three Creeks Brewing Co. Tickets ($12 for adults and $5 for youth under 18) are available from SPRD: online at www.sistersrecreation.com, by phone at 541-549-2091, or stop by the office at 1750 W. McKinney Butte Rd. from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Outlaws defeated the Cowboys 35-7 at Crook County on Friday, September 16, to record a 2-1 record overall. Sisters scored two touch- downs, and held the Cowboys scoreless in the first quar- ter. Jacob Gurney scored the first TD midway through the period when he intercepted the ball and returned it 35 yards for the score. Brother Johnny Gurney capped a 10-play drive into the end zone on a two-yard run. Minam Cravens’ kicks were good and at the close of the first quarter Sisters was on top 14-0. In the second quarter, quarterback Tanner Head hit Christopher Luz with a 68-yard TD pass. Cravens’ kick was good, and at the half the Outlaws held a 21-0 lead. Head threw a 70-yard pass to Luz for a TD in the third, and on the first play of the final period, Johnny Gurney caught a 43-yard pass. Cravens’ kicks were good and the Outlaws stretched their lead to 35-0. Crook County was able to get on the scoreboard with 7 points in the final quarter. The Outlaws wrapped up the night with 446 yards of offense, with 156 of that on the ground. Yardage was spread throughout the ball carriers, with no one player recording more than 40 yards rushing. Tanner Head had the best game of his career, throwing for 284 yards, and hitting the mark on 20 of his 26 attempts. Luz led the receivers with 138 yards on two catches, and Johnny Gurney added 90 yards on seven catches. Coach Gary Thorson noted that the offensive line, which consists of Jacob Gurney, Joel Miller, Brady Wessel, Jaden Condel, Zach Gullick, and Jake Welch were solid all night long, and without a doubt were the key to the Outlaws’ success. “They gave Tanner plenty of time to throw and opened up the run lanes very well,” said Thorson. Thorson told The Nugget that the Outlaws’ defense had their best performance of the year, as well. “Our secondary was pretty sharp all night, and we got another pick from Tyler Friend, in addition to the one from Jacob Gurney,” said Thorson. “The second- ary players (Christopher Luz, Will Miner, and Tyler Friend) did a good job of keeping things in front, and once again the linebackers and defensive line controlled the run game. ...we saw more and more confidence building in our players, and that will be huge as we head into league play. — gary thorson “This was a good night for our program as we started to break out offensively. As the game progressed, we saw more and more confidence building in our players, and that will be huge as we head into league play. We have a handful of kids who can all do some damage on the offen- sive side of the ball, and our offensive coordinator (Neil Fendall) did a great job of get- ting the ball to them, and the players executed some plays very well.” On Friday, September 23, Sisters will play at home against Sutherlin, and will pay tribute to all of the EMS services in the area.
