There are three open seats and only three candidates have thrown their hats in the ring. Two current councilors, Nancy Connolly and David Asson, have two more years to serve of their four-year terms. Andrea Blum, who was appointed to serve out the term of Wendy Holzman, who resigned from office, is running to be elected. Current councilor Amy Burgstahler, who was also appointed to fill a position left vacant due to resignation, has chosen to not run for election. Chuck Ryan, who has served for two years as the chairman of the City budget committee, and is also a cur- rent member of the forgivable loan committee, has entered his name into the race for a Council seat. His background is in the world of finance and since his retirement he has been acting as a consultant for local businesses. High school welcomes new teachers By Steve kadel Correspondent Habitat for Humanity celebrates 25 years This Sunday the commu- nity is invited to celebrate Sisters Habitat for Humanity’s 25 years of building decent, affordable homes for 60 fami- lies in Sisters. The organization will kick- off its festivities at 2 p.m. with two groundbreakings, and a dedication of a new home at Village Meadows, Sisters Habitat’s 17-lot neigh- borhood located at the corner of McKinney Butte Drive and Brooks Camp Road. At 5:30 p.m., the celebra- tion will continue with a free fundraising dinner at FivePine Conference Center featur- ing keynote speaker Clive Rainey, Habitat for Humanity International’s legendary first volunteer. Reservations are required for the dinner as space is limited. Rainey joined Habitat for Humanity International as a volunteer on April 1, 1977, See hABItAt on page 23 Rob Corrigan pulled off a remarkable feat last week at Sisters High School (SHS). He held 30 students’ inter- est for more than an hour while teaching a physics class that began just minutes after 8 a.m., a time when most teens aren’t primed for anything involving math. Engaging his students is an enjoyable test for Corrigan, who said he “loved” math in high school. “Physics, calculus and sailing were resonating with each other,” he said with a grin. Now he wants to impart his own fondness for math and science, which he’ll be teaching this year. Corrigan taught four years at Sisters High before taking last year off to serve as general manager of the Bend craft brewery Crux Fermentation Project. Two other instructors are beginning jobs at the school this fall. Sheryl Yeager will teach flight science and help out with physical education and health while Jami Lyn Weber will teach English. Sisters principal Joe Hosang wrote in a greeting to parents this month, “How can we go wrong with a last name like Yeager to teach flight science?” It was a ref- erence to former military test pilot Chuck Yeager, who is the first person to surpass the speed of sound on a level flight. Weber is a 23-year Sisters resident who has a bach- elor’s degree from Wheaton College in Chicago and a master’s degree from Lewis & Clark College in Portland. She taught at the middle school and high school in Sisters years ago, including long-term subbing, before teaching two years at Sisters Christian Academy. “I try to create a commu- nity of thinkers, readers, and writers where strengths are celebrated and challenges are overcome,” Weber said. “We will try to do rigorous but rewarding work that mat- ters to them now and in the future.
