Wednesday, August 24, 2016 The Nugget Newspaper, Sisters, Oregon C O M M U N I T 3 Y Planes are art at BBR Lodge show By Jim Cornelius News Editor Few aircraft have the old- school charm and nostalgia of World War I-era planes. Two exquisite examples of the era are suspended in flight at Black Butte Ranch, courtesy of model airplane crafter Lee Kufchak. His Fokker Eindecker E11 and Curtiss Jenny JN4 are a featured part of the gallery show at the Lodge Gallery, which is running through August as part of the run- up to the annual Art at the Ranch celebration September 2-3, featuring paintings, sculptures, metal and pottery items, jewelry, wood crafts, books, fiber arts, candles, toys and other exhibits. Lee and his wife, Marti, have been involved with Art at the Ranch for many years, serving as key organizers for several of those years. Lee’s particular art form has been part of his life since he was a kid building model airplanes out of 10-cent kits. With a background in engi- neering and mathematics, Kufchak’s work — which takes between 1,000 and 1,200 hours and sometimes See PLANeS on page 20 ID tags on lost pets critical to recovery By Jodi Schneider McNamee Correspondent Animal rescue organiza- tions across the United States report that the vast majority of dogs that come through their doors are never reunited with their owners. The fact is that a lot of these pets are missing some kind of identification, leaving the shelters not know- ing who to contact. Kennel technician Carly Brown, who works at BrightSide Animal Center in Redmond, sees lost dogs coming through their doors without ID frequently. “Whether it’s a citizen bringing in a stray dog or the police, most of the dogs, even if they have a collar, have no identification. It’s definitely harder to find their home,” Brown said. When BrightSide finds an ID on a dog they immediately make the effort in trying to contact the pet parent. “Finding an ID on the pet is definitely a huge tool that See Id TAgS on page 24 photo proviDeD kimry Jelen’s work will be featured in the fur & feather Show at Sisters Art Works. Art shows love for Furry Friends By Jim Cornelius News Editor Art and critters seem to go together in Sisters. Many local artists feel a powerful connection to wildlife, and to the pets that are our daily companions. Kathy Deggendorfer and Sisters Art Works are bring- ing all that together on Friday, August 26, 4 to 7 p.m. in an artists’ reception for the Fur & Feather Show — which is also a benefit fundraiser for Furry Friends Foundation. The event is part of the Fourth Friday Art Stroll in downtown Sisters. Furry Friends helps Sisters families in financial hard- ship by maintaining a pet- food bank, offering spay/ neuter/vaccination sponsor- ships, licensing fee sponsor- ships and veterinary financial assistance. “I so appreciate Kathy Deggendorfer, The Roundhouse Foundation and all the local artists that sup- port Furry Friends through this event,” said Kiki Dolson, founder of Furry Friends Foundation. “I’ve previewed the show and the art this year is fantastic. I hope we have a large turnout for this wonder- ful evening. “I’m not sure why, but donations to Furry Friends are down this year,” Dolson noted. “Our spay/neuter spon- sorships are up, so it’s events like these that help make what we do possible. We’ll be there with this year’s raffle quilt selling tickets and inevitably exchanging dog stories.” It’s not hard to find tal- ented artists who like to work in the theme represented in the show. “I’ve been drawing and painting animals for 30 years,” said Ingrid Lustig, one of the artists featured in the show. She’s particularly drawn to wolves, having worked in a wolf rescue program in northern California in her 20s. People in the Bay Area were acquiring the great preda- tors for pets — then finding that that didn’t work so well. Lustig spent hours interact- ing with the wolves in her program.
