Wednesday, August 24, 2016 The Nugget Newspaper, Sisters, Oregon Trash to treasure in Habitat ReStore event Some people’s trash was turned into treasure by local artists for the Sisters Habitat for Humanity ReStore’s UpCycle Design Challenge on August 13. Wind chimes made out of old keys, a pet bed made from an old entertainment center and a swag lamp created from a metal funnel were just a few of the items that were up for auction. The upcycle designers entered their work in spe- cific categories and the items were auctioned off as a ben- efit for Sisters Habitat. The following artists received Best of Category awards: “Outside In,” Angie Hodson; “Take a Seat,” Pearl Gregg; “Rustic to Refined,” Tamera Barnett; “Ugly Duckling,” Nicki Gregg; “Work of Art,” Tamera Barnett; “Put a Bird On It,” Jessica Dunn; “Stylish Storage,” Luke and Bethany Gunnerson. The Peoples’ Choice award went to Nicki Gregg for her creation of a coffee hutch complete with a dish set that she made from an old gift-wrapping station. The employees’ choice award was given to “The Bear,” a mosaic created by Sandra Greatreaks. Those who missed the BEND. (AP) — Bend offi- cials have decided to allow voters to weigh in on a 3 per- cent sales tax on recreational marijuana. The Bulletin reports that the Bend City Council approved a measure that puts the tax proposal on the Nov. 8 ballot. If approved by voters, it would become the city’s first sales tax and would go into effect in January. Music in the backyard!
