Wednesday, August 17, 2016 The Nugget Newspaper, Sisters, Oregon A salute to law enforcement... Grand jury indicts in Bend murder case A Deschutes County Grand Jury returned an indictment charging Edwin Enoc Lara with four counts of aggra- vated murder. The indictment alleges that Lara kidnapped Kaylee Sawyer, then attempted to sexually assault her, and then he killed her to conceal the commission of the crimes. The indictment stems from an incident that began when Sawyer’s family reported the 23-year-old woman missing on July 24. Lara, a COCC security officer, was identi- fied as a suspect in Sawyer’s disappearance, after his wife, a recently-hired Bend Police Officer, reported his possible involvement. Lara was appre- hended in Northern California on July 26, after allegedly shooting a man and carjacking a family’s car. Sawyer’s body was found in Dry Canyon east of Sisters. “Kaylee was abducted on the campus of COCC by a campus safety officer who then attempted to sexually assault her,” said Deschutes County District Attorney John Hummel. “Mr. Lara then killed Kaylee in an effort to conceal the crimes he committed.” Aggravated murder is a crime that carries a maximum penalty of death. No deci- sion has been made regarding whether the State will seek a sentence of death. “The decision whether to try to kill someone is the most sobering and important deci- sion our government officials are called upon to make,” said Hummel. “Over the next one to two months I will meet with Kaylee’s family, compare Mr. Lara’s actions to the actions of all the other suspects ever charged in Deschutes County with aggravated murder, con- sult with my deputies, and then sit by myself and make the decision that is fair, just, and dictated by law.” Lara is in custody in Siskiyou County, CA. He is to be returned in Deschutes County in one to three weeks.
