Randall Tillery is the fea- tured artist at the art show, which begins with an artists’ reception Friday from 5 to 8 p.m., which includes refresh- ments and a silent auction. The Art Show continues on Saturday along with the popu- lar Country Fair from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The Country Fair is HAND LAKE: Hike is off McKenzie Highway, beyond the summit Continued from page 20 here, but the route is obvious. There are several downed trees and obstacles, but pas- sage along the edge of the lava flow is not too difficult. When we finally reached the shallows of the lake, we were surprised to see thou- sands upon thousands of tadpoles in various stages of development. These were big tadpoles — large enough, in fact, that I’m guessing they were the offspring of Oregon spotted frogs, a sensitive and endangered candidate species. The receded shoreline of the lake makes for easy walking, and the rustic shel- ter soon becomes visible up ahead. However, there old-fashioned fun for the entire family. There are ani- mals, face painting, bouncy castle, games and crafts. The Country Store offers home- made preserves and relishes, fresh produce, candy, home- baked breads, pies, and cook- ies, potted plants and craft items. The Good Book has a great selection of gently read books. Relax under the pines and enjoy the famous ribs and other menu items at the Café Transfig, finishing with the popular home-made marion- berry cobbler a la mode! All funds earned at this free event are distributed to community support agencies. The Episcopal Church of the Transfiguration is located at 68825 Brooks Camp Rd., at the corner of Hwy. 242 just west of Sisters. is a marshy area, fed by the stream running into the lake, that requires a significant detour to the left (south) – the extent of which depends on the water level. Upon return- ing to the shelter, simply fol- low the same trail back to the trailhead. In spite of our wandering, exploration, and leisurely pace, we were back at our car in just two hours. To enjoy this hike, simply take the McKenzie Highway (242) over McKenzie Pass. The trailhead is about 4.5 miles beyond the summit. As you approach the trailhead, you will see a meadow open- ing in the forest and a brown hiker sign on the right, where the trail begins. A wide-spot parking area is on the left. Since much of this hike is within the Mt. Washington Wilderness Area, a free wil- derness pass is required and available at the trailhead.
