8 Wednesday, August 3, 2016 The Nugget Newspaper, Sisters, Oregon Library exhibit features children’s art Sisters salutes... By Sue Stafford Correspondent The walls of the commu- nity room at the Sisters library are covered with small color- ful painted canvasses created as a part of the Deschutes Public Library System’s sum- mer reading program, Team Read. Several different groups created the paintings. According to Paige Bentley- Flannery, community librar- ian, “The Sisters Elementary Summer School group (ages 5-11) spent one of their reg- ular Wednesday morning library visits painting. Last week I shared art books, we talked about painting and favorite art projects at home, and then discussed reading.” First, they decided where they liked to read, then who they liked to read with, and finally what books they liked to read. The students painted themselves with pets and fam- ily members, at the beach, in a tree house, on a trampoline, reading “Olivia,” “Clifford,” “Harry Potter,” “Mouse on a Motorcycle” and more. In the spirit of Team Read, two or three children worked together on one canvas. “They started out slowly, trying to figure out what they would paint together, but soon paint- brushes and sponges were dipped in colorful paints and photo by Sue Stafford Children’s art is featured in the latest Sisters Library exhibit. creative images appeared,” said Bentley-Flannery. The same process was used for Family Fun Story Time for ages up to five. Families painted together on one canvas, outside after story time last Thursday. Regular library customers also dropped off artwork for the exhibit. “They loved painting all around the canvas — sides, too!” said Bentley-Flannery. “It was a fun two days of out- door team painting!” This is the second year of the summer reading chil- dren’s art show in August at the Sisters library. On the walls of the com- puter room is “Out of the Box,” an exhibit of artwork belonging to Friends of the Sisters Library board member Sue Stafford. The name refers to the fact that the artwork has been sitting in boxes for 12 years after Stafford moved to Sisters in 2004. Her current home doesn’t have wall space for all of her pieces, so she is delighted to see some old friends on the wall. Both exhibits will be up through the month of August. • Liam Hughes, of Sisters Park & Recreation District, wrote: Rob Meeter has served as the middle school ath- letic director and community schools program supervi- sor for SPRD for the past four years. Sadly, Rob has recently given his notice to return to California to take a teaching position. His leav- ing will be a great loss to the SPRD team and the Sisters community, but a great gain to his new employer. Rob is always the first to volunteer for an assignment, and has taken on many other responsibilities in addition to his day-to-day duties. Rob has a clear passion for working with children, and for seeing kids be physi- cally active through competi- tive sports. His experience, dedication, and hard work will be hard to match. I hope the community will join the SPRD team and myself in thanking Rob for his years of exemplary ser- vice, and wishing him well on the next phase of his life. • Michelle Gibbens wrote: WORKMAN’S COMP? Three Sisters Chiropractic & Pain Management Dr. Inice Gough, DC | 541.549.3583 — Since 1997 — M&J On May 21, 2016 a won- derful celebration of life was held at Cold Springs Campground for my mother, Nancy Bailey. The time and effort that everyone put into making it such a special day will never be forgotten or could ever be thanked enough. With all of her won- derful friends, amazing food and the beautiful sound of the guitar, I know she was smil- ing from ear to ear that night. On July 27, our fam- ily joined my Mom and Wally’s ashes together in the water off a private beach in Winchester Bay, Oregon. It was truly a special day and a memory that will never be forgotten as we stood on the beach and watched their ashes come together. They were finally back in each other’s arms. I could have never imag- ined how hard the passing of my mom would be. Thank you all for the love, friend- ship and support beyond what words I could ever say. She loved you all very much and will be forever in our hearts… And forever missed.
