Wednesday, August 3, 2016 The Nugget Newspaper, Sisters, Oregon C O M M U N I T 3 Y Candidates sought for city council By Sue Stafford Correspondent August 30 at 5 p.m. is the deadline for filing com- pleted and verified applica- tions with the Deschutes County Recorder’s Office in order to be on the ballot in November to run for Sisters City Council. However, the deadline for petition to file with Kathy Nelson, Sisters city recorder, is August 16 at 5 p.m. at City Hall. Candidate packets are still available from Nelson. There are three positions that need to be filled, with terms beginning in January 2017. Those positions are currently held by Chris Frye, Andrea Blum, and Amy Burgstahler, all of whom were appointed to fill vacan- cies created at different times by the resignation of elected Council members. Frye will be stepping down at the end of August due to his move outside the city limits. David Asson and Nancy Connolly still have two years left to serve in their terms. Interim City Manager Rick Allen pointed out the impor- tance of finding qualified candidates who are willing to photo by diane Goble habitat volunteers make the thrift Store and reStore run. Jones taught health and physical education for 30 years, and coached multiple sports at the high school level, including volleyball. Jones retired from teaching in 2001, but kept coaching. This year will mark his 44th year of coaching club volleyball. Over the course of his career, Jones has piled up quite a list of accomplish- ments. He was head coach for volleyball for 24 years, and made 10 state final appear- ances, and 12 appearances in the semi-finals. He led teams to many state champi- onships, including five while at Marshall High School in Gresham — and one in Sisters. His final state champion- ship came when he helped coach the 1996-1997 Outlaws See VoLLEyBALL on page 30 By diane Goble Correspondent When was the last time you helped make the dream of homeownership possible for a family or helped some- one build their own home? Did you know you can do that without lifting a board or pounding a nail? Sisters Habitat for Humanity offers commu- nity members the opportu- nity to help working fami- lies become homeowners by volunteering their time at the ReStore and/or the Thrift Store. These two stores are suc- cessful because of the quan- tity of the donations and the quality of people who are willing to volunteer their time to help others. People know that the money raised through these stores stays here and benefits the community as a whole. However, volunteers come and go, and summers are particularly busy for folks so the organization needs to make an occasional plea to old volunteers who find they have some extra time on their hands and new volunteers who are looking to give back or pay it forward — or just want a heart-warming thing to do. “We are desperate for sum- mer help,” said Thrift Store Manager Lenora Fitzgerald. “Donations are pouring in and we need sorters, especially on Saturdays. The beauty section and the toy section need someone’s lov- ing touch to keep displays neat and shelves filled.” Habitat’s ReStore has just undergone some changes and a makeover. The doors closed over a weekend and a group of volunteers converged and rearranged the floor space so that there is more room to process incoming items and an improved flow of furniture and heavy items throughout the store. Volunteers are needed to help with sorting, cleaning, pricing, stocking, and cashier- ing.
