Wednesday, August 3, 2016 The Nugget Newspaper, Sisters, Oregon 11 Antiques decorate Creekside Park By Jodi Schneider McNamee Correspondent A wide assortment of col- lectable antiques lured trea- sure hunters to Creekside Park for the 6th annual Antiques in the Park event Friday and Saturday. Folks searched through vintage trinkets that were on display in booths from vin- tage Singer sewing machines to a 1910 wooden wheelchair. Barbara and Jim McCormick, from Sisters Country, displayed “Texas Treasures” that they collected while living in the Lone Star State for over 25 years. Jim McCormick was transferred to Texas from Oregon 30 years ago. “Everything here today was purchased from antique shows while we were in Texas,” Barbara McCormick said as she picked up a very big vintage rolling pin to show this Nugget correspondent. They say things are big- ger in Texas, and that must include rolling pins. “We purchased a very unique sized 24-inch one- piece wooden rolling pin from a West Texas ranch kitchen,” McCormick added. “It’s a sight to see.” This year, event organizer and vintage car enthusiast Richard Esterman had his rare 1956 D-500 Coronet Lancer on display and for sale. He had his own booth filled with timeless treasures from his personal collection including two 1930 antique one-arm bandits that attracted attention from collectors. “It’s time to let others get enjoyment from these true Americana items,” Esterman said. The VFW and the American Legion had a table set up giving out flags, bro- chures, and the classic red poppies associated with Veterans Day. The poppy emblem was chosen because of the poppies that bloomed across some of the worst bat- tlefields of Flanders in World War I. And red is for the bloodshed of trench warfare. Vendors Karen and Joseph Ashlock from Madras sported an enormous display of eclec- tic treasures from antique dolls to vintage campaign buttons displayed under their tent. Twenty years ago the Ashlocks sold everything to go into the antique business full-time. “We have an RV, and travel around doing antique shows all over the West Coast,” Karen Ashlock said. “I needed some sort of a home base, so we have a house in Madras.” Wherever folks searched as they threaded their way through the tents there was some forgotten novelty or small rarity to capture their attention. “Repurps” is the name of new vendor Derek Roy’s repurposed interior furnish- ings business that he works at full time out of his garage in Bend. “It’s a little bit of art and odd old ‘good’ junk,” Roy said. “And I make wooden picture frames, mirrors and furniture out of what I find.” Roy recently moved to Bend from Missouri, where uestive uriday Music!
