Mathews, Tribune News Service michael Stephen Waverly March 17, 1943 — June 15, 2016 Michael Stephen Waverly, 73, passed away unexpectedly on June 15, in Roseville, California, surrounded by his loving family. He was born on March 17, 1943, in Portland to Joseph and Rosemary Waverly. He is survived by his wife, Mimi Waverly; his Brother, Thomas Waverly (Kathy); his children by first wife Carol Waverly, Kristin Babbs (Michael and grandchildren Connor, Zach and Kendall), Robyn Tripp (Garrett and granddaughters Ellery and Eden), Matthew Waverly (Ellen and grand- daughters Mackenzie and Sarah). Michael was preceded in death by his father, Joseph Valentine Waverly, and mother, Rosemary H. Lenz. Michael spent his ele- mentary years in Cannon Beach before returning to Portland. He had fond memories of learning about the business world from his grandfather, Thomas Hanning, while spending time with him and his grand- mother, Gertrude Hanning. He graduated from Grant High School in 1961. Michael attended Oregon State University where he played football and rugby, and was a member of the Phi Delta Theta fraternity. It was during this time that he was a sergeant and cook in the Oregon National Guard, obtaining training in Fort Ord, California. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in business and technology with a minor in food tech- nology, from Oregon State University in 1966. Michael started a suc- cessful career in the fiberboard and particleboard business in Albany. He even- tually worked all over the country, with extended stays in Oregon, Montana, North Carolina, California, New Mexico and Maryland. He was well-respected in the business and known to be tough but fair. In 2003, Michael married Mimi, retired, and moved to Roseville, California. This stage of his life brought great joy in traveling with Mimi, spending time with her family and his children and grandchildren. He spent much of his time on his favorite hobbies, gardening and cooking. He was a gourmet cook and a connoisseur of fine wines. He saw beauty in everything he touched, and his yards were paradise to the hum- mingbirds he fed. Michael split his time between his residence in Roseville and his second home in Black Butte Ranch. He had numer- ous cherished friends in both communities that will remember him as a generous host and friend. There will not be a for- mal memorial service per his request, but the family would welcome donations in his honor to Sisters Habitat for Humanity: www.sisters habitat.org/giving, P.O.
