18 Wednesday, July 27, 2016 The Nugget Newspaper, Sisters, Oregon remembering... red Cross faces critical blood shortage While thousands of peo- ple from across the country responded to the emergency request for blood and plate- let donations issued by the American Red Cross in early July, a critical blood short- age remains. The Red Cross urges eligible donors to give now to help ensure blood is available throughout the rest of the summer to meet patient needs. A blood drive is set in Sisters on Monday, August 1 from 1 to 6 p.m. at Sisters Fire Hall, 301 S. Elm St. At times, blood and plate- lets are being distributed to hospitals faster than donations are coming in, which impacts the ability to rebuild the blood supply. Right now, the Red Cross has less than a five-day blood supply on hand. The Red Cross strives to have a five-day supply at all times to meet the needs of patients every day and be prepared for emergencies that may require significant volumes of donated blood products. “The Red Cross contin- ues to have an emergency need for blood and platelet donors to give now and help save patient lives,” said Neil Tosuntikool, donor recruit- ment director of the Red Cross Pacific Northwest Blood Services Region. “We are grateful for those who have already stepped up this summer to give and want to remind those who are eligible that hospital patients are still counting on them to roll up a sleeve.” In the U.S., every two sec- onds someone like Ray Poulin needs blood or platelets. Poulin’s liver and kidneys failed following a serious blood infection. The situation became urgent when his liver hemorrhaged. He was given a 10 percent chance of survival. Accident and burn vic- tims, heart surgery patients, organ transplant patients, and those receiving treatment for leukemia, cancer or sickle cell disease may all need blood. Donors of all blood types are urgently needed to help restock the shelves. The Red Cross is thanking those who come in to donate blood or platelets between July 25 and August 31 by emailing them a $5 Amazon.com gift card claim code. Candidate asked to withdraw over online post PORTLAND (AP) — Oregon House Republicans are calling on one of their legislative candidates to withdraw from the November election because of an image posted on his Facebook page showing President Barack Obama with a noose around his neck. The Oregonian / OregonLive reports a spokes- man for the Republicans called the post “absolutely abhorrent” and said George “Sonny” Yellott should apolo- gize for the image. Yellott is running for House District 48. The post featured an edited photo showing Obama’s head on former Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein in an image from the dictator’s 2006 hang- ing. The photo also showed a hooded figure placing a noose around Obama’s neck and the words, “The Making of a National Holiday.” Yellott, a member of the Mt.
