Wednesday, June 22, 2016 The Nugget Newspaper, Sisters, Oregon C O M M U N I T 3 Y SPRD seeks new board member The Sisters Park & Recreation District is looking for an individual interested in serving on the District’s Board of Directors. Andrew Gorayeb resigned his posi- tion on the board last month, and the appointment will be made to complete the rest of his term. The board consists of five members. Board meetings are generally on the first Tuesday of the month at 6 p.m., with an additional meeting some- times scheduled on a Tuesday evening in the middle of the month. Because this position has become vacant in the middle of an elected term, the board will appoint a candidate. However, if the appointed candidate wishes to continue serving on the board, he or she will have to be voted in during the public election process in May. This is a volunteer posi- tion. To apply, fill out the board-member application form, which can be found at www.sistersrecreation. com/board-meetings. For more information contact Liam Hughes at Sisters Park & Recreation District 541-549-2091 or liam@ sistersrecreation.com. Festival offers free concert series Sisters Folk Festival will host a free summer con- cert series at Fir Street Park, supported in part by The Roundhouse Foundation. On Friday, July 15, award- winning songwriters Beth Wood and RJ Cowdery will perform as a co-bill to kick off the series. Beth Wood is a modern-day troubadour and believer in the power of song. Her exceptional musician- ship, crafty songwriting and commanding stage presence have been winning over audi- ences for 18 years. Beth’s music is a soulful, organic, intelligent, barefoot, high- energy communication of joy. Picture a homebody with an ever-present wanderlust, an introvert with a passion for performing, a creative free- spirit with enough discipline to rework her dream year after year, calloused little hands and a big pile of curly hair — and you’ve got Beth Wood. “Beth has been an inte- gral part of the Sisters See coNcertS on page 18 photo by erin borla Susie Werts’ class built a butterfly station to aid in migration. Creating a butterfly waystation By erin Borla Correspondent Sisters Middle School students in Susie Werts’ fifth-grade reading class cre- ated a Monarch Butterfly Waystation at school as a part of their “connection infec- tion” reading integration pro- gram this spring. Werts works with her stu- dents to have them connect what they are reading to the real world. Several months ago the students read an arti- cle about what insects do in the winter. The follow-up dis- cussion in class led to reading an article about monarch but- terflies and how they migrate across the continent every year. “This has been a great project for our students to connect to the world and to develop enthusiasm for ecol- ogy,” says Werts. In order to encourage her students’ passion for the mon- arch, Werts wanted to connect with an expert in the field and was surprised by the extraor- dinary support she received. “I sent out one email ask- ing a few questions about monarch habitat and I got 30 back,” she said. Werts has coordinated with agencies like the United States Forest Service, United States Fish and Wildlife and Monarch Advocacy of Central Oregon to help her class build the waystation. There are two main populations of monarchs in North America, the eastern and western. The eastern population spends their win- ters in the Sierra Nevada Mountains in Mexico, and the western population win- ters in Southern California. According to a study done in 2013 at the wintering grounds, the eastern mon- arch butterfly populations declined 59 percent and were at the lowest level ever mea- sured while the western mon- arch population has declined nearly 90 percent in the last decade. It was determined that the decline in the monarch population traces back to five causes: breeding habitat loss and degradation; wintering habitat loss and degradation; See ButterflIeS on page 24 SISTERS AREA MEETING CALENDAR BOARDS, GROUPS, CLUBS Al-AnonmMonday,mnoon,mShepherdm ofmthemHillsmLutheranmChurchmm•mmm Wednesday,m6mp.m.,mThemEpiscopalm ChurchmofmthemTransfimguration.m 541-549-8737morm541-549-1527.
