Mathews, Tribune News Service Keri Anne Hillabrant July, 1970 – May 6, 2016 On Friday, May 6, Keri Anne Hillabrant, daughter of Leanne Smith, passed to a better place, a place of wholeness. Keri is remem- bered as a loving mom and wife, a huge people-person and a mighty warrior against ovarian cancer. Keri was born in Amarillo, Texas, in July, 1970, and died in her Houston home under the care of her husband, Greg, mother Leanne and hospice. Keri is survived by Greg; Greg’s parents Jack and Jane Hillabrant; daughter Mia and grandson Kedan Teichman; Leanne Smith and brother Jake Ince. Although gone in body, Keri assures us she remains here with her fam- ily and friends in the form of pure love. Gratitude encompasses Keri. During her 3-year bat- tle against ovarian cancer, she has been blessed with the tremendous outpouring of support from her family and friends. Keri’s battle with cancer has taught her that suffering comes from resist- ing, and pleasure is in honor- ing the present moment. Those wishing to con- tribute to a better world on Keri’s behalf can make a donation to the Ovarian Cancer National Alliance. In lieu of sorrow, express your love to those you cher- ish. June and David “Bud” Brandon lived in Sisters for 27 years fol- lowing his retirement. Unions seek corporate tax hike By Kristena Hansen Associated Press PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — A proposal for the larg- est corporate tax hike in Oregon history that could pump a whopping $2.5 bil- lion in additional funds into state coffers each year is now just one step away from get- ting inked onto the November ballot. On Friday, a coalition of public employee unions dubbed Our Oregon, a 501c4 nonprofit, submitted the final batch of 130,000 signatures to state elections officials — strategically above the required 88,100 minimum so that it’s almost certain the measure makes it to voters this fall. It also sent a message to the swelling opposition in the business community that the measure sits well with Oregon voters and that the unions are gearing up for what some lawmakers worry will be among the nasti- est political fights in recent memory. Unions handed over the signatures ahead of the state’s long-anticipated study on the tax hike’s potential eco- nomic impact, which is being released Monday morning and discussed in hearings that day with lawmakers in Salem. “As we continue to make cuts in vital services, corpo- rations in Oregon continue to pay the lowest corporate tax rate in the nation. It’s not fair and that’s why we’re doing it today,” Hanna Vaandering, president of the Oregon Education Association, said during a press conference Friday afternoon at Our Oregon’s downtown Portland office.
