Wednesday, May 11, 2016 The Nugget Newspaper, Sisters, Oregon C O M M U N I T 3 Y Over 1,000 will experience Civil War The word is out to Central Oregon educators that one of the best ways to learn about history is to see it, talk to it and experience it. This will happen Friday, May 20, when 1,175 stu- dents from 14 schools will visit a full Civil War reenact- ment and engage with “living history.” “This is our third year in Central Oregon and the most students we have ever hosted for our school day,” said event coordinator David Banks. “We park a lot of bus- ses in the forest that day.” Students tour the camps and interact with reenactors portraying a range of per- sonalities as they go about jobs undertaken in the 1860s. These activities range from daily civilian life involving cooking, sewing and chores to military activities like marching, tenting, caring for horses and artillery pieces. Everything possible is done to ensure credibil- ity. There are no electronic devices, autos or modern conveniences. Reenactors wear authentically repro- duced clothing, fire black- powder weapons, cook over open fires, use antique tools See WAR on page 21 Outlaw Open and Hall of Fame on horizon Sisters comes together every year with two events in support of Sisters High School and its athletic and extracurricular programs: The Outlaw Open Golf Tournament and the Outlaw Hall of Fame Banquet and Induction Ceremony. Since 1998, The Outlaw Open has been among the highlights on Sisters’ events calendar. The Outlaw Open will be back for its 19th edi- tion on Friday, June 17, at Aspen Lakes Golf Course. The scramble tournament begins with a 1 p.m. shotgun start. The tournament has always been a fun afternoon and evening for the attendees — and it has been the Outlaw Booster Club’s crucial fund- raiser for Sisters schools’ extracurricular programs. The Outlaw Open has raised more than $250,000 for Outlaw athletics, includ- ing more than $30,000 since the Outlaw Booster Club began pairing The Outlaw See OPEN on page 20 photo by erin borla Rima Givot consults with Steve Peterzen at the Sisters HIgh School balloon launch last week. Students launch weather balloon By Erin Borla Correspondent Students in Rima Givot’s Chemistry 2 class had the opportunity to work with scientist Steve Peterzen throughout the last two weeks to launch a 600-gram balloon — complete with experi- ments they designed — and capture live data. Peterzen’s company, The ISTAR Group, just opened a satellite office at Sisters Eagle Airport. ISTAR launches stratospheric bal- loons for the purposes of test- ing experiments in near-space conditions. Using Helium, Peterzen and his crew launch the balloons into the atmo- sphere with tools and instru- ments in order to allow for companies to experiment and to introduce students to near- space research for a frac- tion of the cost and time of launching a satellite. “I’ve been all over the world,” said Peterzen. “I’ve enjoyed working with the kids — but it’s funny because I never finished school. I was in college and knew I wanted to study science, but I saw all my friends taking jobs in physics and focusing on only one specific thing. I wanted to travel.” Peterzen has lived throughout the world, includ- ing nine years in the Antarctic launching stratospheric bal- loons. From 1992 to 2001 ISTAR successfully man- aged 14 separate 800,000- cubic-meter balloons from Antarctic and launched over 20 smaller balloons. According to ISTAR’s website, they were contacted in 2001 by the Italian Space Agency to manage and lead the development of the first long duration balloon pro- gram in Europe through the University of Rome La Sapienza. Currently, ISTAR is based in Svalbord, Norway. Norway offers ease of access to the arctic and incredible infrastructure. Since con- necting with the University of Rome the company has launched 13 balloons from their Nobile/Amundsen Stratospheric Balloon Center.
