Wednesday, May 4, 2016 The Nugget Newspaper, Sisters, Oregon 13 Dinner supports watershed council Girls lacrosse trounces West Albany The Upper Deschutes Watershed Council (UDWC) is hosting a dinner and creative presentations by staff and students at one of the most iconic locations in Sisters, The Barn. Started in 2009, the annual fundraiser, UPSTREAM, is a salute to streams, students and stewardship. The evening will highlight the work of students who have taken part in the UDWC’s education program, “The Upstream Project.” Dinner is provided by The Root Cellar, known for culinary artist, Anna Witham’s masterful combination of nourishing, locally sourced ingredients that please the eye and the palate. A silent auction will feature local artists and businesses giving bidders the chance to purchase a piece of what makes Central Oregon so special. Proceeds from the evening will fuel the UDWC’s efforts to protect and restore the Upper Deschutes River through collaborative projects in habitat restoration, watershed education and long-term monitoring. The Upstream Project helps students develop an informed sense of place for The Lady Outlaws trav- eled to West Albany on Friday, April 29, and crushed the Bulldogs 16-4. Katelyn Josten got Sisters on the scoreboard in the first minute of play, and then put in a follow-up goal at the two-minute mark. Josten punched in three more goals before she settled into an assist-mindset and dished out three beautiful assists for goals. At the half, Sisters was on top 8-2. In the second half, the Outlaws used the game to work on plays, switched to left-handed play, and passed in tighter quarters on cuts. They also worked on perfecting their defen- sive stances and sliding and covering. “The Outlaws held the advantage of having supe- rior stick skills, and put into practice mirroring sticks, and watching the ball carrier to make some great intercep- tions,” said Coach Mikaela Trott. McKenna Jones and Sierra Hummel both had an inter- ception on defense, and con- sistently pressured the ball as it transitioned down the mid- field. The pressure often led to ground ball recoveries, for local rivers and streams. This year alone, students will restore approximately 1,000 plants in the Whychus Creek watershed as part of the Watershed Council’s integrated education and restoration programs. “Today’s students are the future caretakers of our rivers and streams,” said Kolleen Miller, the education director for the Watershed Council. When students connect to the natural world in meaningful ways, they develop a sense of civic responsibility as they learn the importance of stewardship in their local watershed. “When it’s a personal experience, it has a bigger impact,” said 8th- grader Alexa after a planting project along Whychus Creek. Makila Lajko had a wide- open shot in the eight-meter as Sydney Head drove down the field on a fast break. Head passed her the ball, and Makila bounced it in for the goal. Goalie Addy Baney had eight saves and four total goals against, one of which was on a penalty shot. The Lady Outlaws will wrap up their season with a game at Crescent Valley on Thursday, May 5.
