8 Wednesday, March 23, 2016 The Nugget Newspaper, Sisters, Oregon Aglow fellowship plans meeting Girls tennis loses tough match By Rongi Yost Correspondent The girls tennis team lost 8-0 to Redmond on Thursday, March 17, in their first outing of the season. Alana Lukens and Mykaila Hartman (No. 1 doubles) played in what proved to be the match of the day. It was a nailbiter from the start, with the first three games going to deuce. The duo finally fell in a match-breaker with scores of 7-5, 6-7 (3-7), and 5-10. “I don’t think either team ever led by more than a game in either set,” said Coach Susan Fullhart. “This was a huge change for both Mykaila and Alana, who have never played doubles together. Alana played on the No. 4 team last year, and Mykaila played No. 2 singles. Mykaila was awesome from the back court. She kept the ball consistently deep, and set Alana up at the net, where she was absolutely tenacious. The girls lost some steam at the very end, and the cold was really effecting Mykaila. She pretty much lost feeling in her hands, which makes it hard to play. This was a great match, and I was frankly – We can straighten ‘em out – surprised at how well they rose to the occasion!” Mary Florian lost to Jessalyn Losa 4-6, 1-6, in No. 4 singles, but still played a great match. Florian was able to get a lot of balls back, and Fullhart noted that her con- sistent play from the base- line makes her a natural for singles play. Fullhart said, “Even though we got clobbered, I was encouraged by — and proud of — the girls’ per- formances today. I predict that by the end of the season, when we’ve had a little more time on the court and have our line-up sorted out, we will be a force to be reckoned with. “I knew we weren’t going to win a lot of matches, as we have had very little court time due to the recent weather con- ditions. And, we have 22 girls this year, and half of them are new to the team this year. That makes for a rocky start, but I see a ton of potential with this group. They are an amazing group of girls, and an absolute delight to coach.” The Lady Outlaws will resume play with a match at Stayton on Thursday, March 31. Aglow International, an interdenominational organi- zation of Christian women and men, will hold an out- reach meeting in Sisters on Saturday, April 2. Aglow began in 1967 in Seattle, when four Christian women decided to meet for lunch to encourage one another in their faith, with- out denominational boundar- ies. From those four women, monthly luncheons began springing up all over the Seattle area, in other cities and states. Since then, Aglow has become one of the largest international women’s orga- nizations in the world, with over 4,300 fellowship groups in the U.S. and internation- ally. Since 2004 men have joined Aglow under Men of Issachar. At the grassroots level, Aglow consists of local groups who meet for mutual encouragement and support as they look outward with an eye to transforming their communities with purposeful acts of kindness. An estimated 200,000 women and men meet together each month through local Aglow groups — the heart of the organiza- tion. More than 21,000 Aglow leaders worldwide minister in their communities.
